Celtic were favourites to land the 22-year-old but have switched their attention to out-of-favour Everton left-back Gary Naysmith, leaving the way clear for Hammell to switch to England.

West Ham are also keen on signing the player who was part of the Scotland future team that took on Germany last night.

A number of other Championship sides may also make a move for Hammell whose contract runs out at the end of the season.

Can't believe someone hasn't made a point of the very OBVIOUS mistake here.

Name Steven Hammell
Squad # 3
Position Defender
Born Glasgow
Date of Birth 18/02/82
Height

5' 9'
Weight

11st 11lbs
Signed From Bearsden BC

When Stephen McMillan was suspended at the tail end of the 1999'2000 season a then 18 year old Steven Hammell filled in for him at left-back, making his debut in a 2-1 defeat against Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Such was the impact he
made that several years on, the Rutherglen born full back is still there, having made the position his own.

One of the most consistent members of the squad, Steven has rarely missed a game since bursting on to the scene and has now made 150 league matches for the Dossers, despite being just twenty-two.

His talents up and down the left flank have not gone unnoticed. Hammell was a regular in Rainer Bonnhof's Scotland U21 squad and he was part of the team that was narrowly pipped by Croatia to make it to the final stages of
the U21 European Championship.

Steven has but two strikes to his name during his Motherwell career but both have been crackers. His first was a rasping drive in a 2-0 win over Dundee Utd during Eric Black's short reign as manager and his second came last
season where his curling shot flew into the corner of the net to put 'Well on the way to an easy 3-0 win over Partick Thistle.

it must be very hard to scout players in scotland given the standard.

On another note though,

Looks like a potentially good transfer.

.....it is us who is after him. Lots of interest in him though. Very highly thought. Would be a good aquisition.

My very knowledgable Scottish correspondent says "Hammill has never impressed me the times
i've seen him. his crossing is terrible and defending patchy.
seems to be a bit of a media favourite though up here as he's
always being touted for a move to Celtic."
Welcome back Danny.....

We shouldn't be signing players who wear earrings. They can't be trusted.

In todays Adder as well. This is the kind of player we should be looking to bring in. A left-back with pace/attacking ability who is young and highly-rated! Sounds good to me.

Hope we get him. If he goes to WBA, it will defy logic. We should look more attractive at this stage than West Brom.

sounds promising. Hope it comes through. Bye bye borrowdale though i fear. He won't stay if he is 3rd choice.

Borrowdalie is only 19. If we get Hammell it might be worth selling Granville and using Borrowdale/Liegertwood/Butterfield as back up

Although it's hard to be any shitter than Granville, apart from being a 'highly rated' Celtic target how much do we actually know about Hammell .
I seem to remember Speroni being a 'highly rated' Rangers target.

Good player. Linked to rangers last summer but Big Eck suggested he wasn't tall enough.

Would be very suprised if he signed for Celtic as he is not that way inclined, so to speak.

KungFuCharlie

Why do so many people here take any opportunity to take a swipe at Speroni? Yes, he was 'highly rated', and one day he will no doubt fulfill his potential. Too many people think that goalkeepers are the finished article at 22. Leave him out of this.

One we should go for:

Queens Park Rangers have ended their interest in Motherwell defender Steven Hammell after being put off by the asking price.

The Scottish Premier League club are believed to want around 100,000 for the 23-year-old full back, so R's boss Ian Holloway has decided to look elsewhere for new recruits.

"We went to watch him but we won't be going for him," Holloway confirmed.

"I think he's a good player but with the transfer fee we've decided against it. We're currently pursuing other avenues."

The Loftus Road club have yet to make any moves during the transfer window.

I heard a rumour that Granville's injury is much worse than expected. He may never play for Palace - or anybody else - again. Sincerely hope it isn't that bad.

I've suspected this for quite some time that he may never pay again.

Badly missed this season.

Interestingly, I saw on football-rumours.co.uk that DG would be released due to this injury - I ignored it initially, but... :(

Normal accepted footballing practice is to renew injured players contract unless the player agrees to retire and hence claim on their insurance. This what happened with Craig Harrison, and would be shocked if Palace were going to cancel Danny Granville's contract.
