View Full Version : M6 disgrace

Well our foray up north today was a total disaster. Massive queues on the M6 at Birmingham and then ground to a halt for 90 minutes before Junction 15 as a lorry had overturned, blocking the motorway. Had the odd experience of standing on the motorway with lots of other footie fans (including Palace) chatting in the heat. I am surprised there wasn't a delayed kick-off given the number of people actually stuck there - anyone else stuck there?
When it started moving there was no way we would have made it, and so had to turn back - great day!

I was on Coach 1, what a mistake! I really wish I'd caught the train. Robbie & co on Coach 2 phoned Blackburn, to try and get the kick-off delayed. But Blackburn obviously weren't bothered, as their own fans weren't held-up.
We thought we'd get there at about 4:00pm, but our coach driver really put his foot down, when the jam finally cleared, and we got to the ground at 3:20pm, after a 6.5 hour journey. And the Blackburn stewards still insisted on searching my bag, before I went in, delaying us even more!
5 hours it took us- Could of been worse

A big hello! to all the Palace that gave me and my mate a hoot of the horn as we went on our mission on foot up the side of the M6.
Somehow it went from us saying that we may as well turn back to all of a sudden the traffic started moving very quickly and us being only 15 minutes late. However watching Palace sober is something I wouldn;t recommend to anyone.

Well myself and Penge Eagle got stuck in a jam on the M25 for 2 and a half hours. By the time that we managed to get off the motoway, we turned around and went home....grumble grumble..

7 hours. 7 HOURS !!!!!!! Left at 09:00, arrived at the ground at 16:00. Grrrrrrrrr.
What an absolute nightmare that was. Me and my brother (my brother and I ?) were all for turning back, when the traffic suddenly started moving again, so we put the foot down and just made it for the start of the second half. (Which, by all accounts, was probably the better half to see)
Then, 45 minutes later, we got back in the car and drove straight back. All told, 10 and a half hours in the car.
Still, at least we had an open-top car, which was nice in the sunshine.
Nice to see all the Palace fans on the way up there. Hello again to anyone who we chatted to !

Saint Dan the Man and myself left at 9.30. 1 1/2 hrs to get on the M1, over 1 hr to get through Birmingham then stuck in that jam. Turned back just after 2.00. Back home just after 6.00.
8 1/2 hrs of driving to go nowhere.
Pissed off big time.

As selhurst was saying, luckily i was on coach 2 (Robbie & co) and we arrived at the ground at 2.55 so as we were getting in the ground the players had just come out but we did all think we'd be lucky to make the game.
But 7 hours on the coach was awful and i just hope it doesn't happen again because yesterday was the first of many games we have travel up north!

I was on coach 3. Bloody awful, got there about 3:20. It was really tense as we reached the ground, the bloke infront of us had a radio and kept updating us of the game.
It was worth it though. Thought black and gray looked good.

We left Cirencester at 10.00am, making really good time, even through the M5/M6 spaghetti Junction, until, obviously, the balls-up on the M6.
As like you lot, we were stuck for something like 2 1/2 hours, I twice rang Blackburn's offices.
Twice I was told, patronisingly, "Yes sir, we are aware of the situation. But there is nothing we can do about the kick off. But we will be keeping the ticket offices open longer".
Big deal I thought.
I even told the stupid cow I was in charge of one of the coaches with 50 irrate supporters on board.
It came to the point we were talking about turning back.
We finally got to the ground at 3:20pm.
Now, if that had been Moanchester Utd fans caught in the accident, do you think they would have delayed the start?

You were on Virgin Trains SAMO* ... trust me on this, you were lucky! http://cpfc.org/ubb/smile.gif
Just for once getting up late proved to be a blessing, although we did get stuck on M25 for 20 mins.
Consequnetly our friends were well ahead of us, luckily they had a mobile and had warned us Birmingham was bad, so we choose the M1/A50 option which, more by luck than judgement, brought us onto the M6 one junction above the trouble.

Reminds me of Everton on first day when Lombardo made debut. We got stuck on M6 for ages too. Had to do 100 all the way for the final hour. Got inside the ground about 7 mins after kick off, having negotiated with a young lad to "look after" the car.
Worst/best was still Sunderland in the cup in '76 though. Its one thing arriving almost 45 mins late to find you are losing, but as it was 0-0 and we went on to win 1-0 I didnt care that day!

Yeah Brighton, that was us ! It's funny how everyone travelled up there at roughly the same speed. Arriving at the ground at the same time as people you saw 6 hours ago at services on the M1.
Worth it all for 45 minutes of football ? Course ! It's the Palace !

A word of warning for you all for away games up north.
Think Saturday was bad. It gets worse.
Having spent many a Friday night travelling to Stoke, and many years travelling the M6, do what ever you can to miss the M6/M5/M42 triangle. Bermuda has nothing on it.

Nothing to do with the past week-end. I left London to drive to Manchester to catch our flight back to the States, I informed my wife there was no point in leaving early as the traffic would be bad http://cpfc.org/ubb/supergrin.gif
We spent over 3 1/2 hrs in heavy traffic at Midnight; finally arriving at Manchester Airport at 3.30am for a 10.00am flight. Hardly worth spending the money for the room.
Three lanes down into one and nobody working in the other lanes, lots of lights; but not a living person to be seen! http://cpfc.org/ubb/sarcblink.gif

Quite so, Matt. My earlier post refers to the M1/A50 route. Its the first time I've tried it and I was impressed. You get off the M1 at Jct 23A, just in time to avoid the roadworks and Nottingham bottleneck (not as bad as Brum but getting worse every year). Then is dual carriageway pretty much all the way into Stoke, there's a few roundabouts but nothing that should affect your speed to badly.
There's also Micky D's and Burger King on route. As you approach Stoke, its all new road - another tip don't follow the signs to the M6, head north to Crewe and join at Jct 16 rather than J.15.
It took us 45 minutes from leaving the M1 to joining the M6, which I thought was quite good. Gotta be an option for Preston, methinks.
