View Full Version : Bent for 3m [bumped from ten years ago]
I saw on the TV last night that Marcus Bent is up for sale for 3m. Do we not think that bent would make a better addition to the squad than Beattie who will cost the same?

I'd rather have Marcus than Beattie, but i still think £3M is too much to pay for any one player at the moment.
There's got to be a few gems in the lower leagues that we could get at half the price.

10 times what he went for eh? And, I am reliably informed that it was touch and go that he could have gone to brentford for £150k during the week before he ended up being sold to Port vale. It's a funny old game.So how come we always (well of late anyway) end up getting screwed on price?

£3mill for Bent? Grab it!
He has improved immensely since leaving us - when he played against us last season (and scored) he was the best player on the pitch.
Cannot believe his price tag in ONLY £3 million. He'll be worth it, methinks.

How about buying: Wayne Allison - available at 250k!
Good goalscoring record in Div !

Bents a good player but i reckon that we should stick to getting NEW FACES in not OLD ONES,

Would love to have him back. Just before Vegetables came in I saw the future (well at least the few games around the loss at Bolton) and it was Bent and Jansen. What a waste. Vegetables really wanted Barmby and Sheringham, and he should know. Even though he didn't get them.
But really, I cannot see Bent going for £3m in the form he's in. It's just a TV punter guessing at a valuation, if he were for sale. And if he were a the premiership sides would bid his value up.

I woud feel very uneasy about paying £3 mill for a player we let go for peanuts. It would leave a bit of a sour taste wouldn't it. I agree Bent was/is a very good player if he is motivated, but he can be disinterested and lazy too. I would love him back, but we would have the rise taken out of us after letting him go so cheaply.
If Akinbiyi = £5million, then there's no way Bent will be going anywhere for £3m (besides i got £9mill for him in CM3!)

I would rather have a period where we don't spend £3m on a single player. Lets not start trying to compete with the big boys again.

Al from Bromley notes And, I am reliably informed that it was touch and go that he could have gone to brentford for £150k during the week before he ended up being sold to Port vale.
Unfortunately, his memories of the moaning morons at Griffin Park persuaded him he didn't want to go back. Does every club have these idiots who enjoy nothing more than abusing their own players and are actually disappointed when their team plays well?
Al also said It's a funny old game.So how come we always (well of late anyway) end up getting screwed on price?
We always got screwed on price before Uncle Ron came along. Indeed Ron screwed us on Marcus Bent, for Palace's benefit. Until Venables threw it away!

Well it was alleged at the time that Goldberg was willing to sell Bent cheap back to Ron as part of a deal to reduce his debt to Noades just 3 days before bent finally went to Vale for twice as much money. This is only alleged I must emphasise, but my source was usually reliable.

Not too sure whether Bent would be the best option if we had £3m to spend on a striker.
But in answer to the question of the thread.
Yes, I would rather have Bent than Beattie.

I mentioned Wayne Allison as an example of the sort of player we need. If he's available for that sort of money why not?

CPFC (2000) Never sold him. Therefore, there would be know loss in buying him 'back.'
It would be worth it for the 'coventry & Robbie Keane syndrome' He'd go for £6m in a year or two. CPFC 2000 doubles it's money.
Lets get it on!
i Always liked Bent, but I think its once again pure speculation. I do think however if palace play the way they did in ther 2nd half of the Forest game, and get an additional experienced striker, we would have some very exciting times. Perhaps they should move Mullins up front, that OG on Sunday was a Cracker

Now why hasn't anyone else suggested that? ROFL.

I agree with Peter H. Bent has clearly matured since he left us and from what I've seen/heard is a more complete player, but I don't think it's a good idea to splash out sums like £3m until we've consolidated. Of course, Simon Jordan knows much better than I do how much he can afford but £3m would appear to be putting too many eggs in one basket?

Rather than spend £3m on one player - i.e Beattie or Bent - How about £1m for Isiah Rankin from Bradford City currently on loan at Bolton and scored 3 in 3 games this season and 5 in 9 games at Birmingham last season where he teamed up really well with Dele Adebola who is also available for approx £1m.

Coppell - Gone but Not forgotten
I would prefer Bent to Beattie but 3M is a lot of money.
I feel we have strengthened our squad considerably with our recent signings Pollock, Ruddock, Gray and Black and the combined cost of these guys was about half of 3M.

No, I think £3m for Marcus Bent is a bit too much.
