Drinking
The ground is walkable from the town centre, albeit a long one! (20
minutes).
Many of the pubs are on Leeds Road - most only 5-10mins walk from stadium.
Peacock Inn, 392 Leeds Road (opposite Macdonalds) - Friendly pub - All-day
breakfast from 8am-12noon plus sandwiches when available. Pool table.
Families welcome Open All Day
The Spinners Arms - 100 Leeds Road (corner of Thistle Street) - Friendly
pub - popular on matchdays. Bar snacks served until too crowded! Pool
table. Disabled facilities. Open all day
The Woodman - 862 Leeds Road (between M62 & ground) Large roadside pub -
menu from 12-2.30. Families welcome. Open all day
The White Horse 761, Leeds Road - serves bar meals from 12 - 3
The Wise Owl - Leeds Road. Serves breakfast from 7.30am, and bar snacks all
day.
The Apsley, St Andrew’s Road - family pub - full menu from 11.30am
The Old Corn Mill, Wakefield Road - between M62 & ground - huge restaurant -
pub - nightclub complex with bar & bistro. Cavery, full meals, snacks &
sarnies served 12 - 3. Also children’s menu. Open all day
The town centre has a large number of pubs. Most are ordinary boozers.
The Albert, near the Town Hall, is a glorious and authentic old Victorian
pub full of polished wood and patterned glass. It serves Timothy Taylor's
Landlord (a legendary beer in these parts) and the usual Yorkshire staples:
Stones and Bass. They also do cheap meals.
If you're in a crowd, or if you need to arrange to meet up with a group of
others, try the Old Courthouse, right next door to the Lawrence Batley
Theatre, the only theatre in town. This is a new pub but it's been done very
well, and there is a lot of room in there. They also serve excellent and
varied meals in the large upstairs bar. There is a number of different
bitters plus the usual selection of lagers.
If people are particularly interested in decent beer, there are two pubs
that are a bit trickier to find but well worth seeking out:
1) The Slubbers Arms on Bradford Road, about 10 minutes walk from the
station. Come out of the station, turn left at the bottom of the square and
walk for 5 minutes under the railway bridge till you get to the traffic
lights. Turn right then first left onto Bradford Road. The Slubbers is 5
mins walk, at the junction of Bradford Road and Halifax Old Road. It's a
small, triangular pub selling the range of Timothy Taylor's beers, plus
Marston's Pedigree and Stella. It gets quite crowded but it's a good,
authentic Huddersfield boozer with a long history. They sell filling
barsnacks. The bonus of drinking here is that it is only a 5-10 minute walk
down to the ground. Just follow the crowd, or ask at the bar.
2) The Sair. For pub and real ale enthusiasts who have transport, and some
spare time. The Sair was voted last year's Pub of the Year by CAMRA. It's
hard to find, but well worth it. You need to head out towards Manchester on
the A62 for about 4 miles, then take a left turn up a steep hill, and it's
at the top. There is a sign for the pub at the bottom of the hill, pointing
upwards, though it's easy to miss. Well worth seeking out. They brew their
own beer. Particularly revered in these parts is Enoch's Hammer.
Head of Steam - St George’s Square - multi-roomed pub occupying one wing of
the Grade I listed Huddersfield railway station. Open 11-2am. Meals served
12-10.
Also Rickys Bar and the Bradley Mills working mens club are located on Leeds
Road. Alcohol is also sold within the ground. Probably best to have a pint
within the ground itself, (as some of the above pubs sometimes don’t allow away fans in colours) as there are open bars at the back of the away end. If you can't bear to watch during the game, then you can
alwayspop out for a pint as the bars remain open during the first half and half time. They even serve draught Guinness!
Food
Immediately around the ground, the only outlets are burger vans. Along the
Leeds road is fish & chip shop, McDonalds, Indian takeaway. In town
Centre - junction of John William Street & Kirkgate has a variety of food
outlets.
