Thanks Mat ov,

This was the biscuit crumb bearded bastard whom I hold responsible for my latest descent into Civ addiction.

I heard him interviewed on the Today program whilst driving the nippers to nursery.

He wants hanging.

Recovery is all about taking responsibility for your own actions. And one day at a time.

Found myself with the Civ 2 programe open on my main PC the other day and it took everything in me to close it down before it got me again. Really I should even avoid posting anymore on this thread because it will have me again and then my life will just descend into chaos again. I kid myself that I keep it on there to show how I have mastered it but really.....well lets put it this way I know that I aint really cured.

That's funny, I started my first game last night and was given Catherine to control. Took out Alexandra of Greece (the only other major nation) with ease. I didn't get how to finish after that. I was allies with all the minor cities and the save option disappeared from the options menu... in the end I just had to quit as I couldn't be bothered carrying on with no threat of war

StudentEagle 15-07-2012 09:18 AM

So, in a Mayan game in which i'd lucked out with a small continent to myself, I set about establishing the cultural and scientific capital of the world. My nearest neighbours, the Spanish, cosied up early on. As did the Austrians, the Siamese and the Indians. The Arabians were always a bit suspicious and sparked a few conflicts with our cosy group.

Rapidly approaching the modern era and up pops Maria Theresa - the Arabians are plotting agai st you, watch out. Why thank you, Maria, I shall fortify the coastal cities immediately. I order our defensive navies to form a ring of steel around the coast nearest the Arabians, when suddenly, out of nowhere...

Hello Isabella, what brings you here today? Are you looking for some of our recently acquired wine? It's a fine vintage I can assure you.

I'm sorry, what? You want to cancel our expensive research agreement? Your people no longer wish to pay for our silver? Your fleets are sailing toward my unguarded shores?

What treachery is this! The privateers swing about just in time to devastate the advancing horde of Spanish caravels. Not today, Isabella. We Mayans are not geared up for an amphibious invasion, our fleets are designed to protect our island nation. But your treason cannot go unpunished. Tomorrow, our offensive force will take sail...

In my current game she's been about the only stalwart friend I have. Stuck by me through thick and thin. Prepared to overlook my blatently empirical ambitions and dastardly dealings with neighbour states. Good girl knows and respects a strong man ;) Or is it because I'm playing as Queenie Eliz and our Cath bats for the other team?

BTW what level do you all play?

haha. Well we have been in a couple of research pacts.

Imperial of course... D'oh. :clown:

Adlerhorst 16-07-2012 06:57 PM

:)

All derives from Imperator, innit.

Like King / Tsar / Kaiser derives from Caesar (and yet it was Jules who thrice denied he was trying to be a King, at the Lupercalia IIRC).

Ancient Rome was / is awesome. If Civ 5 has a Romans option I would be Scipio Africanus and kick everyone's butt.

adzcharlton 17-07-2012 02:03 PM

Bismarck can go ****himself.

That is all

PalaceMonkey 29-07-2012 09:15 PM

just got this.
see you on the other side

The Omen 29-07-2012 09:54 PM

I've just completed my first game. I was the Japanese and had the Persians, Barbarians and Babylonians against me.

Was close up until the Barbarians kept threatening war so I gave them what they wanted. They supposedly had a stronger army, but my advancement in naval warfare and being the first race with planes meant I won over and weakened them sufficiently, but at the same time, scared the other two races into being very wary of me.

In the end I went to war with my ex-friends the Babylonians to slow down their progression and I eventually won by completing the space race with Augustus Caesar rating.

A couple of questions for the more experienced players though:

1. I found myself feeling the need to build lots of cities to get a feeling of progression... but is it really needed in Civ 5 to win? I couldn't work out if it was a good thing or just a hindrance on my races happiness.

2. One of the options once you conquer a city is to burn it down. Why would you want to do that?

3. If you do lose the game, do you still get the choice to continue? (Assuming you haven't been wiped out)

4. With more advanced games, I assume you have to have a real goal to win? I found myself with the strongest army raging wars whilst having the UN diplomacy centre built and building the space project...

5. Do you feel the game advances a little too quickly through time? I wish it was slower. I found that I didn't get to use so many units as my research was so quick meaning I kept getting new advanced hardware.

6. Any other tips?! :)

2) keeping a city as an annex/puppet whatever it's called, costs money & unhappiness in the short term
and you have to defend it.

Nope. 'Empirical' actually comes from a totally unrelated Greek word.

Adlerhorst 30-07-2012 05:32 PM

I am pretty certain I didn't (or at least I certainly didn't mean to) suggest that Empirical came from Imperator, but that Empire / Imperial did.
