Liverpool

Any recommendations for away-friendly pubs this Saturday, as I haven't been to Liverpool for 20 years?

Cheers in advance.

Your best bet is to drink in the city center and then get a cab or bus to the ground from there. Thats what the majority of Palace supporters usually choose to do over the supposed 'Away pubs' near to Anfield.

The Ship and Mitre on Dale Street is always a good starting point if you arrive by train. Just a 5 minute walk from Lime Street station and renowned for serving good beer. There is also The Baltic Fleet opposite Wapping Dock and The Echo Arena. It has a large beer and ale selection with friendly enough staff and regulars. If you head there however you will definitely need to book a cab to the ground or leave plenty of time to walk back in to the city center to catch a bus.

Couple of seasons ago I drank in the Flat Iron, which is close to the ground. Mostly Liverpool fans but very friendly and didn't have any trouble from them at all. However, I did ask a few what they thought the score would be... Not one of them gave us a goal :) We won 2-1 as per.

We will go to Flanagan's Apple on Matthew Street. Been there for the last three seasons and Palace will need all the luck they can get so I'm not messing about with a winning formula!

Any suggestions for pubs to take kids with us?

Kids are fine in the place I mentioned above - I've taken my son there a few times now. It's about 15 minutes to the ground in a cab.

The Ship and Mitre suggested above always has a few groups of Palace fans drinking there.

If you do go there, it's best to go upstairs rather than to the ground floor bar. It's quieter up there and better with kids.

I always go to the Arkles.

It's just round the corner from the away end - full of Palace when we played up there earlier this year.

For those who like a craft beer, there's this place only 5 minutes away from Lime Street called 'Dead Crafty Beer Company'. They have a very good selection of beers if that's your thing what with 20 taps and 250 different beers by the bottle. Imagine a much larger Box Park Cronx Bar :p

Looking at their current beer list, id recommend giving the 'Roadside Picnic' a try if you like a Belgian Sour type beer. Tried it at a beer festival the other week and it's bloody lovely stuff! Start on the session type beers and then hit the higher percentages once it comes to light we're playing 343 again!
