England squad for Brazil and Germany friendlies

Good squad with some interesting choices, not least our RLC. I'm sure some will moan at Southgate for whatever reason though.

For a couple of friendlies it's not a bad squad. I hope he's sets out a team to give it a real go.

Not sure Gomez or RLC would have gotten in if it wasn't for the clubs they play for (Chelsea not us unfortunately in RLC's case) Surely both Cleverly and Cork have done more this season given RLC's injury. Happy for him though. In terms of Gomez how can anybody in that Liverpool defence get near a call up for anyone? The less said about Lingard the better although he's had a couple of decent games. Good to see Abraham and Winks in there, they've both been in good form and it's good to see young players do well. Good squad and I might even be tempted to watch for the first time in god knows how long depending on who he starts.

Who put the graphics together? Unreadable.

Ain’t just about current form, also about potential. RLC and Gomez are young and have lots of room to improve, Cork and Cleverly on the other hand are average now and won’t get better, and definitely will never be good enough to be anything other than squad filler, so what’s the point in taking them above talented youngsters with room for development?

But that's been the issue for years. How many big club youngsters have been promoted to the senior team when they weren't ready/weren't good enough and did nothing for years (speaking of Cleverly, he was one) Look at someone like Tarkowski at Burnley, 24 years old, loads of potential and arguably been one of, if not the best centre half in the league this year. Same with Mee. As much as I hate to admit it, that c**t Dunk's had a good season at Brighton so far. It's 100% about big club bias just look at what the three who have been called up have in common. There's only really Abraham who's earned it (RLC probably will with more games but he's been injured for half the season and has no goals or assists yet)

Ah I agree youngsters from small clubs don’t get enough of a look in COUGH COUGH Wilf. But average players almost 30 like Cleverly and Cork, I don’t see any issue in leaving them out.

Jesse Lingard... If he were playing for Stoke, West Brom or Newcastle he'd be nowhere near that side. Sums England up.

Icy 03-11-2017 11:54 AM

Yup and Ashley Young is an embarrassment.

They really should be getting more of the under 21's involved and developing them, not playing past it wankers.

jimmy the gent 03-11-2017 11:56 AM

Don't have such a problem with Young, he is consistent and can be played anywhere down the flank. A decent option to have. Lingard will always piss me off as he's nowhere near Zaha and yet along with Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Sterling and Theo Walcott, was regularly picked ahead of him regardless of form. Sums England up. Not been a true meritocracy for years. All egos and player profiles.

EagleSE24 03-11-2017 12:02 PM

Build the team around the Spurs players. Then hopefully there will be some cohesion to the team.

I always used to wonder why England didn't just play the Arsenal back five in the late 80s/early 90s. I know Stuart Pearce was better individually than Winterburn, Butcher better than Bould etc but they were so well drilled surely it would have made more sense than throwing strangers together...

Been that way for 10+ years now and the FA/various England managers just don't seem to learn.

Nicky Butt springs to mind, one of the first names in the squad whilst at Manure. Once he joined Newcastle he barely made any squads.

They really dropped a plum when they turned their noses up at Wilf.

yeah but he doesn't fit the mould of the attributes you need to be an england winger, i.e. kick the ball in front of you and run after it, try to cross it, fail, repeat
