Old Selhurst Park photos

I was just going through my old photo drawer and found these images of Selhurst Park from the late 60's/ early 70's:

Game that was abandoned, maybe against Blackpool at 0-0 scoreline, end of '68 or early '69:

After the 3-2 win against Fulham in '69 which saw us promoted to the old First Division for the first time in history:

Ditto above:

If anyone can fill in any more details (or post the photos directly without having to use a link!), please do.

People moan about the state of the place now.If it rained back then and you were not inthe old stand you were cattle trucked. In the last picture why is someone walking across the penalty area in front of Jacko while a game is going on? Obviously security was a lot laxer in bygone days.

The Blackpool game picture is slightly misleading. The Arfur was still under construction and part of the roof was on. (You can see the crane in the picture) I used to stand on the grass at the top of the Whitehorse End. Imagine letting fans use a stand whilst under construction these days! Also pretty sure we lost the rearranged Blackpool game.

Brilliant pics, bring back memories. Thanks for sharing them.

Yes we did lose the re-arranged game. However after then we had the long break for the bad weather and came back with the 17 game undefeated promotion run.:p

Great memories, thank you.

Even the seagulls came to watch Palace rather than Brighton back then...

Hey Nobby can I add these to the Nostalgic Photo Gallery?

I put the first one in there as a trial, but want to edit the text (need to give you credit for the picture) - won't let me do it without a password.

Where are the Mods when you need one?

Phone them all. It's only 2am in the UK right now.
And if you can't reach anyone, wait until it's 2am Eastern time, then call Butler.
:)

Great Pics Jim. That's exactly when I started going to Palace myself as a 9 year old. The quality of the pitch is so much better these days as well as the facilities. Amazing to think that people would accept being exposed to the rain, wind and snow, standing on mud. It feels like a long time ago....

When are you coming over next?

Great photos, I loved standing with my Father on the Holmesdale terrace, always got there early to claim our usual place, rain or shine.

Reat photos, way before my time but what I really liked was seeing the ones in colour, I've seen lots of black and White photos from that era but I think they are the first colour ones I've seen, which really gives you a feel for what place was like with the grass verges etc... Thanks for sharing those

imashed 24-12-2011 09:42 AM

great photo's and it proves that the holmesdale was built on the piss as it always looked when it was terreracing as well.

Ruskin Old Boy 24-12-2011 10:04 AM

Marvellous photos, many thanks :p

Selhurst18 was taken from more or less where my mate Chris and I used to stand. I don't think we ever thought about standing in all weathers to watch Palace, we just did it. The Blackpool match was an interesting one as the opposition featured a youthful John Craven who signed for Palace 3 years later. Palace had played the previous day (Boxing Day) at Bramall Lane, drawing 1-1.

PS Wrote an article on the 68/69 season for Palace Echo, not used in the article was a mention of the attendance for the abandoned match, 18,887. That would suggest the photo was taken well before kick off, say about 2pm. Think the score was 1-1 when the match was abandoned. Jimmy Armfield was playing for Blackpool in those days.
