Not sure whether to be encouraged by that performance or despondent about our luck in conceding another late losing goal.

Given the injury list I thought the tactics were spot on until the United double sub, and we played very well first half against a below par United. The ability to bring on Rashford, Mata and Shaw shows that the odds were heavily stacked in their favour as the game went on, and it was the first goal for Smalling that was our undoing. Their other two goals were a result of us running out of juice, and that's the difference at the moment with so many injuries, together with a lack of luck in general. Maybe Hodgson should have brought Riedewald on earlier, but the quality of our bench is just not good enough to rely on against top quality opposition.

Hennessey - 4 - inspires no confidence at all, and apart from his one on one save early on was a gibbering wreck throughout tonight

Wan-Bissaka - 7.5 - very impressive couple of games from the young man, particularly so tonight. Great positioning, tracking and tackling, being pedantic, one of a few who could have done better on the second goal.

Van Aanholt - 7 - great finish for the goal, and decent performance at the back, many times holding his own in one on ones. Should have done much better for Lukaku's goal however.

Tomkins - 6 - generally good as ever tonight, but uncharacteristic shocking mistake for Smalling's goal which started their comeback.

Kelly - 6.5 - not too bad on his comeback, gave away some silly fouls.

Luka - 6.5 - held things together well against quality opponents in the middle. Will be kicking himself for not closing down Matic, but probably did not have the energy.

McArthur - 6 - ran himself into the ground as usual and nearly got in a position to score in second half.

Schlupp - 6 - quick thinking to assist for PVA goal, and good to see him back which gives us much better balance in the absence of Zaha. Faded as the game went on which is to be expected

Townsend - 7 - great player when he displays this much energy. Fortunate with the deflection, but at least he wants to have a shot. Our most threatening player.

Sorloth - 6 - tries hard and keen to run with the ball, which is good. Big step up for him and obviously needs time, but yet to see whether he has the quality required. A good start in my opinion.

Benteke - 6.5 - better tonight, and got in many good positions without quite having the conviction to score. Great defensively. We need more of this from him.

Riedewald - didn't affect the game

Hodgson - 6.5 - got it right for the most part, just doesn't have the bench currently to change things too much, but could possibly have changed it when Mata and Shaw came on as we were running out of steam fairly obviously at that point.

The ending of these last two games are incredibly demoralising, but hopefully we can take the positives out of tonight's performance against top opposition and move forward. If we can get more players back by the Huddersfield game, and keep the levels of performance going, we have enough to stay up, but we need to turn the tide of results by that game, which is absolutely crucial.
