2016/17 season compared with last season calculator

Time to set the ball rolling again.

The following thread compares the results from last season to the actual results this season. It is not a predictor (I leave that to Ian Hart) but it does provide a guide to how well, or not, we are doing overall.

In our first season following promotion it was our form against the clubs who eventually finished below us that stood out, whereas in our second season we almost doubled the number of points against the teams that finished above us but dropped points against teams that finished below us, particularly at home. Last season was mixed although we only picked up 14 points out of 30 from the 5 teams that finished below us.

Our home form continues to let us down.

However, the stand out feature of our 5 seasons in the Premier League, stretching back to 1997/98, is our inability to perform consistently across a whole season. We only play well for half a season as evidenced below:

-- Points------ 1st half ---- 2nd half ----- Total

2015/16 -------- 31---------- 11 ----------- 42
2014/15 -------- 16 --------- 32 ----------- 48
2013/14 -------- 16 --------- 29 ----------- 45
2004/05 -------- 14 --------- 19 ----------- 33
1997/98 -------- 21 --------- 12 ----------- 33

The only prediction I would make is that if we perform as poorly in the first half of this season as we did in the second half of last season then we will be welcoming a new manager before Christmas.

I have switched the results for last season from Newcastle to Burnley, Norwich to Middlesbrough and Villa to Hull.

I have added a couple of columns to show the actual number of points we had after each game in the previous 3 seasons.
