He essentially worried that there were too many people, and consequently everyone would end up poorer as resources could not match unchecked population growth. It was a reasonably influential theory in the 19th century. He was wrong, as technology and methods greatly improved agricultural production, but who's to say such progress will continue sufficiently to allow future growth from today's 7bn?
