Domestic cups

Just my thoughts on the state of domestic cup competitions.

Over the years both the league cup & fa cup have been devalued in the eyes of many people for a number of reasons. I find it very sad that this is the case.

The trend started when man utd pulled out the fa cup years ago & the apathy to both cups from the so called top clubs since is shameful.

Nowadays nearly all of the premier league clubs & championship clubs don't field full strength sides for either competition & I feel it shows not only a lack of respect but also a lack of ambition.

At the start of the season 3 trophies are on offer & for a vast majority of the premier league winning that league is never going to happen. They however only have an ambition of staying up due to finances. The cup competition gives them their only real chance of winning something yet they go at it half hearted. Clubs like villa who have no chance of going down preferring to pick up 3 points against Bolton on a saturday than actually trying to win something.

As palace fans at the end of the season what will we remember. Is it 3 points at home to Birmingham or going to old Trafford & knocking the scum out. Or will we remember the win at hull or the up coming semi finals & potential final.

Getting to cup semis & finals brings fresh excitement round the club which can only be a good thing. Sadly in football now most people's thoughts are financial gain.

I for one can't wait for tonight & at the end of the season will remember old trafford, semi finals & hopefully final before any league game.

Let's be old school & actually try & win a competition which we will remember for years & years to come.

Bad example, Villa fielded a full strength side against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

I don't think there is any doubt that we want to get to the final now we've got to the semi.

I think attitudes are improving for some and worsening for others.

I also believe that it depends on the fixtures.

Man Utd and Man City played in this season's third round, and I would argue that it was good as a Prem fixture between the two. Next round is Liverpool for them. I think the FA Cup has some magic still, but all teams should kick off at 3pm for a start.

I mean, why don't the FA sell individual matches, rather than selling the competition to an individual broadcaster? That would help, I think. The FA can give each fixture a price for being sold to TV companies, and the money generated can be put in the prize money pot.

There is the BBC, ITV, Sky, ESPN. There are four vacancies for fixtures there all at 3pm on a Saturday - More than enough.

I've been thinking this for years now and always wind my spurs mates up by asking them what their ambition is this season....is it to finish 4th or 3rd at a push.

Unless your United, City or Chelsea ever other premier teams ambition seems to be champions league spot, avoid relegation. I mean fancy being a Villa fan or some team like that, how depressing, which is why if I remember correctly was one of the reasons Curbishley got the push from Charlton, fans getting depressed for not being able to kick on, constantly finishing 10th but never having a cup run. You can sort of see where they coming from. I can understand when teams go up they need to establish themselves but once they do they still seem to disrespect the cups.

Football is almost not like a sport anyone more specially in the premier. The majority of teams compete to avoid relegation where as 20 odd years ago teams would compete to win the flaming league. And then the only chance a team get's to win silverware and have a good cup run, they can't be arsed and as you say would rather avoid defeat against Bolton or Wigan away.

Maybe that's why supporting Palace is special as I can't remember too many seasons where we're not competing for something or trying to avoid relegation.

Anyway i say we're bloody due a Wembley appearance so come on and lets make Selhurst rock tonight!!

Spice it up,

Keep the FA cup as it is, scrap the league cup and have a British cup.

They're a bigger and better club than us, as much as I hate to say it. We might have 20,000 plastic supporters to fill our stadium at the moment, but when their enthusiasm fizzles out we will have nothing over Palace. I actually hope they go up now just so we don't have to go through two more humiliations next season.
