As it happened.....Fish was brilliant and left most wanting more after closing with 'Forgotten Sons', while Hughes seemed intent on rolling out every rock 'n' roll cliche in the book - left four numbers into his set..... Want more full band Fish now! Come on Waddon have a word and get him back to the Peel! |

It's been cancelled chaps Statement below (sent to me via John Lees' Barclay James Harvest who would have been appearing). It is with great disappointment that I must Notify you guys that the Crystal Palace Garden Party will not now be able to go ahead. When it was realised that a 1.5 ton scissor lift truck must come on to the stage to erect the sails and rigging some cursory tests were made to the structure. There was some obvious weather wear to the stage and the temporary boards that were put down some time ago ... On closer examination it seemed there might be a problem a structural engineer was called and rotten joists checked etc it was discovered the delapidation was much worse than was at first thought Any sign off on safety or otherwise of the structure cannot be made possibly for several weeks or more... Under other circumstances postponement to a new date would be an obvious option but due to the Olympics, no Police support can be used until after the Paralympics and after then, the park already has other events in the diary up to the end of September after which it is unfeasible to have an outdoor concert... To me this represented an opportunity that I have been working towards for several years and have been working solidly over 5 months 7 days per week! I can hardly put into words the frustration I feel... Yours sincerely and with a heavy heart Mike Fox Crystal Palace Garden Party Ltd JLBJH are very disappointed at this turn of events, but obviously it's out of their hands. For refunds, please contact the agency where you bought your tickets - any problems with getting refunds, please let us know. |

Bought 'Squackett' A life within a Day CD this week.
Two Prog greats Chris Squire & Steve Hackett - so I was hoping for something exceptional. I'm a big fan of both, so maybe a little more critical than most. To be honest it sounds a little tired and uninspiring. Maybe the more I play it the more I'll like it - as with a lot of Prog stuff! I'd say there's a lot more Hackett influence than Chris Squire here which I suppose is to be expected, but it's not his best work. A collaboration that unfortunately doesn't quite come off I'm afraid to say!

The first Celebr8 prog festival will happen on Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8 at the 2000-capacity Hippodrome in Kingston.
A House Of Progression promotion, IQ are to headline the first night, playing the whole of their 1997 double album Subterranea, with a specially designed stage set. It Bites, who recently released the well received Map Of The Past album, top the bill on the second night. Says House Of Progression mainman Twang: It just feels like the right time for an event like this. What weve got is a line-up that combines both up and coming and more established bands. The venue itself is amazing. Everything is state-of-the-art, and there are three levels, with lots of seating available, as well as wheelchair access and a disabled area. So everyone can watch this in comfort. And the sound will be excellent wherever you are in the Hippodrome. The full line-up is as follows: July 7 Main Stage IQ 8-10pm Pallas 5.30-7pm The Tangent 3.30-5pm Sean Filkins 2-3pm Acoustic Stage Matt Stevens 7.05-7.55pm Gary Chandler 5.05-5.25pm Kerry Chicione 3.05-3.25pm July 8 Main Stage It Bites 9-10.45pm Magenta 7-8.30pm Touchstone 5.15-6.30pm Tinyfish 3.30-4.45pm Dec Burke 2-3pm Acoustic Stage Alan Reed 8.35-8.55pm Kerry Chicione 6.35-6.55pm Gary Chandler 4.50-5.10pm Kerry Chicione, who recently left Mars Hollow, who had been due to perform, will not only be appearing as a solo artist on the acoustic stage but will also be guesting with Touchstone (who replaced Mars Hollow on the bill) on a special song, and one more act is to be added to the acoustic stage for July 8. In addition, there is also to be a special announcement at Celebr8. I cant tell you in advance what it is, adds Twang. But its going to get a lot of people excited. And we will have a small number of advance tickets for this event on sale during the festival. Weekend tickets for Celebr8 itself cost £70, with day tickets also available, costing £45. You can get these from www.celebr8prog.com, or www.themerchdesk.com.

It's been a stunning month for new releases - topping the lot is Marillion with Sounds That Can't Be Made, and after listening to it and nothing else for over 500 miles of driving I can say that it is possibly their best album yet and it definitely opens with their best song yet in Gaza. I saw them in Wolverhampton and London and they are as good as ever, Gaza is absolutely stunning live. I can't wait for Port Zeeland in March!
Also this month was a fantastic album from The Pineapple Thief, called All The Wars. I saw them at the Camden Barfly last Sunday and I can't understand why they're not selling out venues at least the size of the Forum. When I've not been listening to Marillion this month it has mostly been TPT. Finally, the new album by The Reasoning, Adventures in Neverland, arrived yesterday and on the first couple of listens I'm sure it's the best they've done yet. I might well be tempted to take in their tour next month as well. |

'Gaza' is one of the tracks on the free CD with this month's Prog magazine.
I thought they lost their way a bit after 'This strange engine' but I've decided to add the new CD to my birthday list TPT have more or less passed me by but it's hard to keep up with so much prog that is being released these days. SAGA's new album is one that grows and I can't keep it off of the CD player at the moment.

Keep forgetting there is a music thread on here, mind elsewhere!
Got to agree with a few points made above: The new Hackett is brilliant - might have to try and pull a few a strings to get a decent ticket for the gigs next year! New Marillion album - much better than the 'Happiness....' pair in my opinion And as for the Pineapple Thief - All The Wars is my album of the year so far, so impressed, but they need to shoot whoever it was that booked them in to the Barfly - how the hell do you go from selling out the Borderline to playing there? Seems odd to me........ really good live band. |
