London Bus Strike 2012
Seems like they are trying to get an injunction to stop this strike tomorrow
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-18530784 Unlike previous tube strikes, and despite how much it will disrupt my travel to and from work, I can actually sympathise with the bus drivers and support this strike (if it goes ahead). Why should Bus drivers be the only public transport workers to not get an olympic bonus? Travel advice if the strike does go ahead. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/trans...w-7873093.html

Why should ANY public worker get an Olympic bonus?
No, really? And if you agree that they should not, then supporting the strike because they are the only ones not in on the scam is desperately sad.

I actually have a degree of sympathy with them over this. If you give an Olympic bonus to one part of the public sector then you open the flood gates for the rest to demand similar. Personally the sooner we are shot of this loathesome event then the better for all of us but if some real Londoners can get their hands on a few of the billions of pounds that have been spunked on this then at least we can expect them to give our local economy a bit of a boost. |

I have a great deal of sympathy for bus drivers. They receive a paltry salary in comparison to Tube drivers for doing what is a far more stressful job.
In answer to Maz, I'm unsure why any public sector workers should receive an Olympic bonus. If their working arrangements are the same then perhaps they shouldn't? However, if there is disruption to their lives based on a change to their shift patterns (working more unsociable hours perhaps?) then perhaps they should? |

All of us in London will have some disruption to our working lives.

I am in full agreement with Maz over the principle on this but the reality is that having backed down to the Tube workers at the first hint of industrial action it was inevitable that the rest would follow and I get the impression that the costings had been built into their projections.
They will do a deal with the busworkers. |

Good businesses seem to have resolved this by giving their staff some flexibility on working arrangements. Unfortunately this isn't an opportunity for bus drivers as they have to be at their place of work in order to deliver their job. Although I obviously caveat that comment with my initial post. But in general I do think that bus drivers receive a comparitively poor salary in relation to other professions. And I probably won't judge them based on this. |

Some businesses will adapt because their business model allows them to; others will not; not because they are not 'good' but because their customers are not flexible.

The olympics are weeks away - plenty of time to sort this out. Why strike ?

If they are being required to work overtime I see no reason why they should not be paid for it.
If they are just holding the city to ransom for providing their normal service they can **** off

The strike went ahead after union bosses threw out a Games bonus offer from the employers which would have paid the £500 being demanded to between 70 and 80 per cent of drivers. Under the terms of the £8.3 million offered to the operators from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), a deal brokered by the Mayor, the money had to be awarded to those directly affected by the Olympics. The deal offered the full £500 to those affected but Unite insisted it be paid to all staff, whether affected or not, and including supervisors and engineers. But that reduced the overall amount to under £500 - possibly around £340 - and was thrown out. Employers also said the union demanded the bonus be tax free. Unite said that for every strike they will add £100 to make up for loss of pay - meaning the union is now claiming a £600 bonus and exacerbating the dispute. Peter Hendy, the transport commissioner, said: "It is a disgrace the offer was not put to the members.

Ouch.
So they want paying whether or not they do extra work or not? Way to go.

I am a public sector worker in the NHS our workload will significantly increase during the games. I do not want or expect a bonus, this is part of my job and I will do it to the best of my ability regardless of numbers of patients that come through my clinical dept.
Greed is an unattractive trait.

Based on those rough figures from ES...
if £8.3m is available and it works out at £340 for all members = 24411 members 24411 members wanting £500 = £ 12.21m (rounded up) Before Tax If we keep it simple and call it 20% for all (under £34k) 24411 members wanting £625 = £ 15.26m (rounded up) Nearly double the figure Boris has put aside. ![]() ![]() (feel free to correct this)

Its the evening standard remember so they will have a very right wing slant on the whole story so I will try not to jump to conclusions. However, from the information I've it didn't look like a bad offer. More services will be required for the games so I would assume that the settlement of £500 for the "affected routes" drivers served to compensate for this. No problem with that. More hours more pay. No idea why people not affected at all should be compensated. That's taking the piss as far as I can see. It appears everyone is though. The post office and DX (business post mainly solicitors use) want more money to do their normal jobs during the Olympics. Basically, it looks like everyone thinks there is going to be all this extra money coming in and wants to grab some for themselves. People who will gain nothing from the Olympics will have to foot the bill in the end and a couple of jammy bastards will cash in.
