Well, it is only day 2 and Britain has 1 medal for the cycling. I think it is overrated though, the whole lympics thing. Win this, win that. I mean how excited can you be about winning the synchronised swimming or the floor exercises in the gymnastics unless you are an actual competitor? Frankly, I can't see the point of a lot of these competions. Who would watch them if they weren't in the Olympics? Are there any people to watch the minority events in the intervening years? Can anyone name the world champion in women's judo(any class) for instance?Save the money on running these events and just have the runners.

Rubbish. We passed numerous pubs in the Box Hill area and they were rammed. At 8 in the morning one pub was open with a BBQ outside serving bacon rolls. Afterwards all the pubs were heaving, with people stood outside peering in the windows, to see the rest of the race after it left Box Hill. I think it was probably their busiest day ever.

I think the idea of the Olympics is good but the over commercialisation and ridiculous control freak Olympic committees have tainted and spoiled the event along with the way Taxpayers are mugged up into funding virtually everything due to the force mantra that it is prestigious and that National /local businesses will gain massively.
In reality a bunch of elite individuals and a few select international companies walk away with huge profits and leave debts along with White elephants for years to come for the Host nation.

Not in Leatherhead the shops were empty and pubs no fuller than usual .
The pubs done a little better today as the weather drove the fans inside.

IMO a lot of places missed a trick by not opening early like that pub did. We got to Sutton station at 7 in the morning, like a lot of other people had done, hoping to grab something for breakfast, and nothing inside or outside the station was open.

Well I've got quite excited about the gymnastics, went to the morning session of the women's qualifying and it was an amazing event the things those girls can do on the bars etc.

Plus the UK team are currently lying 5th we've got the leader in the uneven bars, the men have also qualified for the finals with several guys are in the running for individual medals.

For me the Olympics are about the minor sports, those competitors who drag themselves out of bed at 5 in the morning ever day of the year deserve their moment in the Sun far more than those like footballers who get paid millions and can't be bothered to warm up if they are on the substitutes bench

No 'bonanzas'

Tourist attractions in central London also saw reduced visitor numbers over the weekend, according to the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions has said.

Its chief executive Bernard Donoghue said visitor numbers were between 30% and 35% lower.

He said this was "partly because the kind of visitor you get during an Olympic year is different to any normal year, and it is also partly because people think it is going to crowded and hectic here in central London".

Hoteliers across the capital have also complained about reduced occupancy levels.

Satbir Bakshi, owner of Hotel Earls Court, told the BBC: "Everyone was expecting big, big bonanzas, but this is the worst I have seen in 30 years.

"The Olympics was all hyped up, and every hotel - including mine - put their prices up.

"But with a week to go before the start of the games, I had to put my prices back down again. Like everyone else I'm only half full. Normally I'm full at this time of the year."

Travel industry commentator Mike Bugsgang, said that despite any current problems, the Olympics would give the London tourism sector a major boost in future years.

"The brilliant opening ceremony watched by millions around the world will undoubtedly help to put London on the 'must visit' list by overseas tourists in the years to come," he said.

"This fact together with the outstanding television coverage of games events showing historic London landmarks such as Greenwich, Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court etc will play a major part in attracting tourists and their much needed spend to Britain in the future."

Renaming the Olympic Park "Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park" once the games are over. Yeah, took a lot of imagination that one.
