I think the worrying trend is how many shots keep getting pushed out into the middle of the box. One or two you can understand or just put down to having to make a good save, but there have probably been 7 or 8 at least in the past 4 games. 3 have ended up in goals and if Leicester hadn't been so rubbish then there might have been a couple more. There must be a point when you start questioning technique if so many end up in the middle?

People need to remember that the type of saves you make are dependent on the type of shots you are facing. Under Pulis we had 10 behind the ball, often limiting the opposition to long shots or set pieces. Now we play a far more open game, which may well have resulted in a higher number of shots from close range, especially from the full back areas. Good forwards know where to put those shots to make them almost impossible to hold onto.

The criticisms of Jules may well be justified, but not including the impact of having a much more exposed back four risks missing the point.

This.

One of the televised games yesterday, spurs game I think, there was a shot and save similar to that of Arsenals second goal, the keeper parried the ball away at a an angle and with some force, the commentary team made a point of saying what goal keeping that was. Keepers must work on this but I'm afraid this is happening too often now with Jules..

Also happened a number of times in the Boro Leeds game - Leeds keeper was getting some distance on his parries

News Shopper extract of article just seen online as I drink beside the bridge over the Tyne. Have not noticed Paris with his hand in the air, but if so makes it all the more odd!

It’s been a magical 10 years for Speroni at the club and his services to Crystal Palace are almost unrivalled in recent history. But there comes a time when Alan Pardew needs to look towards Premier League survival instead of sentimentality. His distribution has been something that has become notably more pedestrian this season and you can put your mortgage on seeing Pardew raise his hand aloft in disgust every game at the time it takes for the Argentinian to get rid of the ball.

More concerning, however, is the success of his distribution, our number one has the lowest success rate of distributions of any keeper in the league with just 42 percent. It isn’t even a case of calling on for Manos de Dios to be indefinitely dropped but rather to give him the threat. Wayne Hennessey has been more than capable of stepping in for Speroni in the cup this campaign and it was harsh of Pardew to opt for Speroni in the FA Cup defeat to Liverpool.

Really good point this. Also, the parried shots from those angles are more likely to fall into danger areas. We still need a keeper who can do better than Julian on these. Jury is still out on whether that can be Hennessey.

Read my thoughts on Julian Speroni and whether it's time for Manos de Dios to be dropped, or at least rotated in the remaining third of the season. Link: To view the link you have to Register or Login

New York Eagle is playing for a contract
When Jules pulls off a quality diving save, it looks better than it really is due to his size. He got a great review against Leicester when he parried a few into dangerous areas not to mention Everton game.

Basically his not doing great at what his best known for, his weak on crosses and his distribution is poor.

AP has chopped and changed the rest of the team, might be best to give Hennessy a few appearances to keep everybody on there toes!

Do you really think AP is picking Julian Speroni purely for sentimental reasons? AP doesn't strike me as being a sentimental person. Quite the opposite in fact.

I think we will buy a quality keeper in the summer.Jules will rightly play until then.Speroni isn't having as good a season as last, but hennessey has not impressed enough when given a chance to claim his place.I think dover was his only clean sheet, but they didn't even have a shot on goal.

I don't feel at ease when Hennessey is in goal. I do when Jules is. Both clearly have mistakes in them, but if they didn't, they wouldn't be playing for us.

Nail on head. If Joe Hart or Ben Foster were at Palace, Jules wouldn't be playing. But they aren't, so he is.

As I have said before how can the jury reach their verdict until he is put in the dock to argue his case.

Spot on, although I'd rather have Jules than Ben Foster TBH.

Personally, I think we're blessed with two very good goalkeepers; yes, Speroni has unfortunately managed to parry shots and crosses into the paths of onrushing strikers in recent weeks, but he's still pulled off saves that few keepers would have managed and look at his positioning for when Sanchez breaks clear for Arsenal, superb and again would have resulted in a goal against most Premiership keepers.

I'm not suggesting we shouldn't always try to improve, but I think some are guilty of losing sight of the quality we actually have in our ranks.

Any decline in form should be considered in the context of the team shape and approach.

It's no coincidence that Speroni and Delaney have looked far less assured without Jedinak in the side - without him there has often been a lack of protection at the base of midfield, and we have been vulnerable to teams running at the back four.

If he isn't impressing in training then he is unlikely to be thrown into the team while we are still in a relegation fight. The fact that Speroni played in the FA Cup game against Liverpool would suggest that Pardew isn't impressed.

Distribution stats aren't to be taken too seriously. Just shows we lack a target man. Most keepers punt it up the middle. If we aren't winning those balls is it his fault or the instruction to do it or the players going for the headers. I actually thought distribution had improved recently using the full backs more.
