For whatever reason, Pardew seemed to throw all of these fundamentals out of the window. Fundamentals that had served us so well, for so long. Bizarre.
So in effect you're saying Pardew instructed the players to:

"Don't work hard, don't play the percentages, don't defend as a unit, don't take advantage of set pieces."

Bollocks.

No, that is not what he is saying. Obviously.

What we can all see clearly is:

- the players are fitter and covering more ground / closing down
- team is organised and it's very clear they are defending as a team again
- 4 excellent January signings were made
- many players have regained performance and confidence levels that we haven't seen consistently for 12 months
- we have stopped the diagonal ball hoof that dominated our football (after playing meaningless balls around the back 4)
- we are defending higher up the pitch
- free kick and corner delivery has improved
- we have won 2 home games in succession. Not done since 2015

Draw your own conclusions...

There is an obvious difference between instructing players to do something or just ignoring it.

Obviously not, but you know what I meant anyway.

I'm saying that Pardew neglected the fundamentals that make up any decent team. He seemed to just expect all of those things to happen on the pitch, without working on them off of it.

There's a reason why managers like Pulis and Allardyce do so well at clubs like ours:

1) They usually take over a side that is performing poorly in comparison to their potential.
2) They have a 'back to basics' approach, which will give any team at all a fighting chance.
3) They make their teams work as a unit on the pitch.
4) They get the very best out of average players.

It's not rocket science, but it works very well.

I agree with every word of this but the point is that we were, at best a decent team, no more. The problem was that Pardew wanted to make us a "better team" without upgrading the players and to make matters worse got rid of 2 of the key players of the "decent team"

Ironically since big and little Sams arrival we have acquired 4 players that would enable to progress but have had to go back to these basics before we can progress, as under Pardew the squad seemed thoroughly confused.

To turn a decent team into a better team, you do not sacrifice those fundamentals.

Simple as that.

There-in is the irony! We have replaced those players and upgraded in key areas but have gone back to those fundamentals.

Indeed. Lee Dixon was recently bemoaning the failure of the current Arsenal to do the basics when defending. All the best teams do the fundamentals well. The work rate (and hence fitness) from the Chelsea players this season has been very high. They squared up to a very physical Stoke last week. They defend from the front with Costa putting himself about. It is not the fact that they have flair players that worries other teams. It is the fact that they do all the fundamentals so well that you know you will get few chances against them.

Pardew is a chancer, a bit flash, with a short attention span. He can be a decent manager, but quickly gets distracted and loses interest. He seems to have a permanent mid-life crisis.

More likely the absence of instruction/structure lead to the breakdown in those areas.

Sammy Lee.

As much as I love Allardyce, I think Lee should get his fair share of plaudits.

Seems funny remembering him playing for Liverpool and wishing he played for us when I was a kid.
He's our assistant manager now and I couldn't be happier.

That may have been during the Barry Bannell years!
