Video Assistant Referee

Looked for a thread on this. Couldn't find one so I thought I'd start one.

Niasse's tuck and salko on Saturday seems to have re-surfaced this topic up again so it's worth a discussion. Should this be introduced?

Against are the perennial arguments over the potential it has to interrupt the game; that refereeing mishaps are part of the theatre and these decisions even out over time.

For is the argument that there's loads of cameras and readily available coverage beamed to an audience in the hundreds of millions who have better real-time information than the poor fella who is charged with making the decisions. They don't help themselves, but to this end the ref is being hung out to dry.

My opinion is that the argument for is persuasive to the extent that it is, at least used for major decisions. Goals, penalties and red cards. With each there is a natural break in play. These major decisions have the most impact upon games. By having a qualified ref watching a TV feed with different angles the guy on the pitch has the necessary support to be sure of his positions rather than guessing; making the wrong decision by being unsighted etc.

Other leagues are beginning to use it. The financial gap between the PL and Championship is sufficiently huge that the risk of refereeing mistakes condemning a club is now too great. It makes no sense to me that this technology isn't introduced.

However it's a view.

Thoughts?

For a penalty it makes sense in all ways. It can be reviewed in the time it takes for the players to stop voicing their grievances. Will sort out the shit like we had on Saturday.

You'd think it was a no-brainer. Have a qualified ref in the tv truck with access to all the angles.

Only downside is that despite all the opinions, people are still saying 'but even if they retrospectively review the Niasse award, he won't be punished because there was contact'

Since when was football a non-contact sport anyway?

If the ref gives a penalty or a red card then there is a natural break in play and an opportunity for a review, but if there's a potential penalty or red card that the ref doesn't give, then play (in many circumstances) continues. Not saying that this makes video assistance impossible but it is a significant difficulty.

It should happen in some form but the foreign trials seem farcical so far. Delays are far too long and even then the ref is getting it wrong sometimes.

It's been shit in Italy so far. Refs taking like 3 or 4 minutes to watch an incident then give a penalty or not.

Next break in play. If they have their wits about them it can be reviewed whilst play continues.

Sky transmission of game is always a few seconds behind real time. I can often hear an incident on a radio commentary in the kitchen and be back in front of the TV before it is shown on screen.

The 4th official or a video referee could be watching a slightly delayed transmission from a limited number of views; possibly main camera and from behind both goals. If play had not been stopped he could signal to the referee that he considered a decision doubtful and play could then be stopped in a non-critical area, much as currently happens for a serious injury.

The referee would then be allowed to only see 2 replays from any of these limited views played only at real speed. Additional views from cameras level with the penalty area lines could only be used if there was a doubt if the offence was inside the area. This could effectively reproduce the current situation where additional referees are used in major fixtures.

The match referee decision would be final and any referee or 4th official who had made consistent errors after the replays would be marked down in the match observers report.

I think I might be more inclined to have an additional referee on the pitch, running different angles and possibly tasked with looking for specific things. A bit like NFL. Rugby and tennis are stop/start games anyway so not directly comparable. Mistakes will still be made/missed, but I'd be concerned about changing the flow of a game with replays, and the potential for gamesmanship if captains can request a review (which they would probably have to be)

Took them FOUR minutes to review and then give this as a penalty (excuse the shit video!).
