Supporters Help - August 1969 (before Man U game)

In the two or three days before our opening Div One game v Man Utd the club asked for supporters to volunteer and help to clear the grounds outside of all the rubble etc. left from building the Arthur Wait stand, the new two level Whitehorse Terrace and the new Supporters Club Hall. I was there Friday and Saturday morning - anybody else there as well.

Also have there been other occasions when supporters have helped the club before a game.

It's for part of my A-Z for the Man City programme.

In 1975 myself and four or five others who had just left school and hadn't found jobs wandered up to the ground pre season for somewhere to go and found the main gate open.
We were soon approached and asked if we wanted to help the club by demolishing the gents toilet on the Holmesdale - how could we say no ?
It was extremely hot that day and the guy told us that we couldn't be paid in money but could have as many crates of beer we required.
So off we went, no helmets, hi viz or whatever, just slegehammers.
Great memories.

There had been a lot of summer building in an effort to prepare Selhurst for our first season in Div 1. I remember arriving in the morning to help clear what was then the new supporters club building in the car park behind the old stand, opposite what is now the club shop. It was a bar and social area for fans, long since demolished. We worked all morning before moving round to the brand new Arthur Waite enclosure ready for a full house against the legendary Man Utd stars. Out came Law, Best and Charlton etc. It all seemed quite unreal to this 17 year old at the time.

Fans were asked to clear snow off the pitch the day before a home game at least once (v QPR?) (In the 90s) in return for a ticket each. Huge stacks of snow pitch side so high that you couldn't see the advert boards, but the game was on!

Saturday 10th July 2010 a group of us gathered to sweep the stands and clear out rubbish, dirt, and wash down seats in preparation for the first season after CPFC2010’s takeover.

I was 11 and cycled from shortlands to the ground, gates were open and team were on the pitch practicing so watched from the large fates on junction of holmesdale and park road, hardly anyone around but recall the "kick off" practice repeated - one touch forward hoofed to left wing and (was it) gerry queen running fast for teh ball almost at the corner flag? also recall the awful thirst i had

a few days later i was on the way to sydenham childrens hospital having been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (not sure they had type 2 back then )

Managed to find an after.

Could they not have rebuilt the WHL like the Arthur? Maybe even wrapped round the roof.

I remember a social hall/bar in the 1970s where the car park is now. Was that a new building put up after the one you referred to was demolished then?
I only ever went in there to book coach travel for away games, 77-79 period.

We used to go in there after games in the mid-70's to let the crowds die down even though we walked home from the ground! They always had the telly on in there so you could see the other results and the tables. They did all the away travel bookings in there too.
