Don't know if there any Palace fans in these pictures but we played two games in two days away to Slavia Prague on 16th and 17th May 1908!!!

We won the first game 4:5 and the second 1:4! (photos courtesy of the Prague Palace supporters club!)

Great find

Palace played 4 more friendlies on that tour of Bohemia including another one against Slavia. John (Jake) Madden formerly of Celtic and Scotland had become Slavia's manager in 1905 and one wonders if there was a connection with someone at Palace. Madden stayed at Slavia until 1930.

Edit: a good profile of Mr Madden: To view the link you have to Register or Login

Alan Ball was the 'after dinner' speaker at one if those CPFC corporate lunches, some years ago. I think it was at Selhurst Park... I went to a few.

He was absolutely appalling and completely embarrassing. He went on a rambling really really angry diatribe (yeah I know I do) about how hard they had it back then, and what a bunch of wankers every player since 1980-whatever was.

But thank goodness our own Bernard Manning was there to rescue the day...

Another great couple of links plumey, Palace’s first venture into Europe, only 110 years ago!

Brilliant finds

Both are about the first Palace tour abroad. The article in Czech is mostly about the game against Hradec Králové (Koniggratz is the name you'll find in Palace history books - as it was in the Austro-Hungarian empire).

(I've seen Hradec Králové play in Prague, at Bohemians 1905. They're a bit of a yo-yo team.)

Some scans from the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News from September 6th 1924 which has a selection of photos from our very first match at Selhurst Park.
