As someone said earlier, AWB will mean the club doesn't need to fork out for a RB in the Summer.

Dobbo - not anyone screaming out for an immediate 1st team chance but I'm convinced that Kirby will be first choice in centre mid in about 18 months time. Lumeka is a clever wide player with a real eye for goal. He may be worth a gamble if Townsend got injured before Zaha is back. Hungbo has made big strides this season. Scores goals. Can play wide or behind CF. If keeps progressing at this rate, he could be pushing for a place in 12 months time.
The difficulty is the huge gulf between u23 and first team which is bigger than the step Sorloth is having to make from Scandinavian football IMO. Makes it so much harder to judge who will have what it takes and appreciate your insights as someone who watches them regularly.

The case of Bissaka though shows its not until you given them a go you find out if they can do it. Not sure he was high on anyone list as the next one to come though the academy and make it, much like i don't think Clyne was at the time.

With us not likely to be clear of the drop with games to spare it will be tough again this year to really give these youngsters an opportunity this season. Would like to see Kirby, Lokilo, Lumeka etc given 30 minutes to show what they can do against seasoned pros.

Before getting too carried away, we should note that Rashford is also 20.

According to the article in the Guardian on the Afewee academy (Clyne, Scannel, Corie Andrews and Mandela Egbo), Clyne was all down to them and nothing much to do with Palace.
Clyne was second choice behind another promising lad in the academy (who disappeared into non-league) wasn't he ?

Michael Abnett. Went on to play in Iceland. Is Non League now I think.

I'm looking forward to Wan-Bissaka teaming up with Zaha on the right hand side. I hope they strike up a good understanding.

Yep, still a very raw player. I’m not sure Mourinho’s the bloke to help him develop, and we need him to improve, being England’s brightest light behind Kane, Sterling and that knob Alli.

It's a fine margin, went to see the youngsters, at Croydon Athletic a few years back, Abnett looked class that day.

Another one who I thought was pretty assured was Jack Holland, now doing well at Bromley.

IIRC Cadogan and Djalili where ahead of Wilf back in the day..

I think it was Nathaniel Pinney who claimed he kept Wilf out of the youth teams

Totally agree with Gonzo in that U23 football is poor preparation for 1st team. Not least because U23 games are played at a much slower pace.
As a result, the majority of lads are going to struggle for an extended period when trying to step up and play for the 1st team.
However, every now and again we get a pleasent surprise when a youngster takes to it like a duck to water and quickly plays as if they've been in the first team for years.
Without giving the odd one a chance when the opportunity arises we will never know who will be a success.
The upside of the current injury crisis is seeing how well Bissaka has taken to it.
And from watching the U18s regularly, I know that his "success" will give a massive lift to those in the age groups immediately behind his. They'll be renewed belief that there is the possibility they could also make it.

To be fair to the club a right back has purposely not been bought as they did not want to block AWBís progress.

Fantastic to see another player making it and performing exceptionally well in difficult circumstances. The kid ainít scared of making a tackle or getting forward and putting a cross in. Itís like heís an experienced pro. His performance on Monday was unbelievable, everyone was behind him and encouraging him. He could have been star struck but not one hint of it. Letís not burn him out though.

Superb news it is because supposedly the coming ages are some of the best in years apparently. You'll know more.

Also refreshing that after wasting so many millions of pounds on turd AWB coming onto the scene.

Tim Sherwood can be a clown but I think he hit the nail on the head. He spoke of youngsters just getting loaned to poorer sides and really having to stand out. He believes Kane wouldn't be the player he is today if he went to a lower club as rumoured at a given time.

Early days but 2 great performances and the lad has shown so far he has great ability and technique.

The biggest thing i have liked though so far is his composure on the ball and his calmness under pressure.

Not fazed by playing in front of 26,000 people against 2 of the strongest sides in the league takes some doing.

You need to have the right sort of character to make it as a professional footballer at the highest level but he looks promising.

Woosie gets it right

Credit to Woosie (who many of you will know watches and for years has watched the progress of a lot of the youth and development players). On another recent post about the Academy & U23 players he was asked who was most likely to step up from the U23s. On 19 Feb 18 he said Wan Bissaka, and keep an eye on James Daly too. 25th Feb 18 AWB made his debut.

He needs to work on his Crossing which was the only thing that let him down the other night.

Agree, but this is a thread discussing AWB.... wasn't digging him out, just a observation. I do worry some people are bigging the guy up too much... he's had 2 great games... fingers crossed he'll continue to perform to a similar standard.
