In hindsight it was pretty scary being crammed in like that, but at the time was OK. Glad I didn't have to pee once an hour like these days!
Yes, I was there too in the Holmesdale for sure but not sure where, but midway up, right to the goal was my usual position perhaps you can confirm Bob if I was standing next to you for this game & did we make it on the pitch at the end my memory is fading fast these days. I agree it certainly was scary being crammed in.

I'm pretty sure we were standing together, and I think you drove. Where did we go after the game? It was somewhere different... I want to say Dulwich Common, but to be honest it could have been anywhere!

OK, here's another:

Yes you are right, I believe I did drive because I am seem to remember now where we use to park, we had to park some way away and we thinking that it was going to be a lot bigger crowd then usual; but not realizing it was going be to our record crowd, incredible. As for after the game I think we went to a local pub in Norwood but I am not sure.

Yeah, you always had a fairly good idea what the attendance was going to be; but I never expected over 50,000. Was expecting about 42k. I was one of those fans who' d stay in the pub and arrive just before kick off. That night I brought my sister and got there around 6.45. I'd say we were probably one of the last group to get in. I wonder how many were locked out. When Arsenal won the double in 71 they won the title on a Monday night at White Hart Lane. They estimated at the time that 50,000 were locked out.

Took my wife to this as her first football match!. We were squashed on the Holmesdale. Three quarters of the way up behind the goal, my usual place, and then nearly at the front when we scored the second!!! I remember lots of people losing shoes where people had trod on the back of them, and never being able to recover them as it was too tightly packed to bend down and retrieve them.

That great book ‘we all follow the Palace’ has that amazing photo of the holmesdale. As I was hanging onto the railings on the Whitehorse I had a great view of that. I also remember an amazing buzz, still atmosphere, smoke from fags and the burger vans.... what a night.

to this day I wonder how there was'nt a Hillsborough type crush that seriously injured folks, I was 11 at the time, my old man took me and my younger sister, we became separated during the crush in the Holmesdale, they eventually headed home, I wonder if my parents were worried? they never seemed too concerned but after finding that perch on that rubbish skip by the corner of the Holmesdale I jumped down after the final whistle and headed home, walked back to Pollards Hill, I never made it onto the pitch.

Hang on a minute. This needs a little probing.

She's not still your "wife to be"? Getting married is a pretty big step but you must be through the probationary period by now.

Nobody has really divulged the mystery of how the original gate figure of 51,801 was eventually reduced by 399 to 51,402.

My guess is that the extra champagne bought for the boardroom post match needed paying for out of petty cash and this was the only way our Secretary, Alan ‘Clouseau’ Leather and Micky Hurst our club accountant could reconcile the
figures after counting up the gate reciepts and having to fill in the tax reciept.

The actual gate really could have been 55,000 plus as it is well documented that the Holmesdale had loads of fans that had rushed through an open gate and there are many stories of people finding other ways in.

People who have started following Palace since the capacity was severely reduced after the various alterations caused by losing much of the Whitehorse Terrace to Sainsbury’s and gradually introducing seating where there was omly standing - probably do not realise how vast Selhurst Park used to be.

My first match was in 1970 at home to West Ham and the gate was in excess of 42,000 - I can remember several 40,000 plus gates - it used to get packed, but there always seemed enough room for more, there is talk that there actually were spaces at the front of the Holmesdale that even more people could have squeezed into!

Absolutely no way. I was there.

I remember the 45,000 gates the next season and not feeling overly sardine-like at all and the ground not chocca. I don't think an extra 6,000 on those particular days would have made it such a squeeze as it was v Burnley which has convinced me as you say 55,000-57,000 a much more likely true figure.

Though to put that into perspective when Celtic played Leeds just 9 years earlier 136,000 was the gate. Fookin' hell.
