Simon Osborn hangs up his boots

Simon Osborn
Bromley Football Club would like to pay tribute to Simon Osborn who today announced that he was hanging up his boots for good.

Simon joined Bromley in September 2006 and was instrumental in their promotion from the Ryman Premier Division at the end of that season, forming a partnership in central midfield with Barry Moore that took the team to second in the league and victory in the play offs.

In total he made 85 appearances for The Lillywhites, becoming Player Manager midway through the following campaign and helping Bromley to a top half finish in their debut season in Blue Square South.

Born in Croydon in January 1972, Simon began his career at Crystal Palace before being sold at the age of 22 to Reading. After one season with The Royals he became the subject of two £1M transfers in quick succession, signing first for QPR and then, in December 1995, for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Simon spent six seasons at Wolves, during which time they reached the First Division Play Offs and the Semi Final of The FA Cup. All good things must come to an end however and, following short spells with Tranmere (on loan) and Port Vale, he joined Wolves’ First Division rivals, Gillingham in October 2001.

The opportunity to return to the Midlands raised its head in July 2003 as Simon linked up again with his former Wolves manager, Colin Lee at Walsall. Lee was relieved of his duties towards the end of the season and former England star, Paul Merson took over the managerial reigns with Simon appointed as his assistant.

After making over 100 appearances for The Saddlers, Simon moved on in the summer of 2006 making a fleeting appearance at Hereford before returning to the area in which he grew up to sign for Bromley, scoring just eight minutes into his debut against Ashford Town (Middlesex).

In two last moments of glory, Simon scored the winning goal in last year’s Ryman Division One South Play Off Final, securing promotion for Cray Wanderers, just a couple of weeks after helping Bromley lift the Isthmian Veterans Cup. The Club just hopes that Simon’s decision to retire doesn’t extend to veterans football!

I'm amazed he was still playing. A decent player but too lightweight to be anything more.

I seem to remember him scoring a few screamers for us. I may be wrong but Coventry away and Ipswich at home ring a vague bell?

Deft little header in the Blackburn thriller of 92, our second premier league goal & a screamer at Boro bout December time, forged a good little career for himself post SE25.

Amazing he played for another 17 years.

Enjoy your retirement

Yes, he was one of Smiths 'Bisto Kids'. Played in the same team as Bobby Bowry, and made about as much impact.

A very tidy player and reasonably creative, just lacked a little dynamism to be anything more I thought. Also was one of the slowest players we ever had! But a good enough player at Championship level

Good luck to him in retirement, hope it all goes well

That was Ricky Newman but they all merge in to one from that era.

Once went out for a pint with SO and Neil Emblen after we drew at Wolves - both were really decent guys and good company. I think is good to see players carrying on as long as they can and giving valuable service to lower league clubs. Well done Simon on a great career.

There is always one more game... it's tough to hang them up!

Bromley Vets won 5-4 against Maidstone United Vets at Hayes Lane in the Isthmian Veterans Cup First Round on Monday 14th December.

An own goal, two goals from Steve Slater, one from Richard Simpson and one from Simon Osborn were just enough to see of visitors Maidstone United.

Quite a nice story in the currant bun today from Gary O'Reilly remembering Palace's 2-1 win over Brighton in 1989 and the surprise of that game ending up in the guiness book of records thanks to Five awarded penalties.

Following the “Which goal made you most ecstatic” poll (thread still running if you want to vote) some people suggested I also ran a thread shortlisting the opposite – the goals which made you feel most heart-broken at the time they were scored. Once again, in view of the large choice, you can choose TWO. And don’t forget you don’t need necessarily to have been at the match – you might have heard about a goal whilst sitting at home, and kicked the cat.
