Team photo for the start of season 1921/22

Palace have just been promoted to Division 2 - the trophies at the front are the 3rd Division Championship shield, and the London Challenge Cup.

In the background is the grandstand at The Nest, with its central gable.

My Dad was very recently over from spain, and brought a picture along of how far he has got with the painting he is doing for me of The Nest. I thought some people who read this thread might be interested in seeing what he's done so far.

Apparently he is only about one third of the way through. He has started at the top of the painting and is working his way down. As you can see, there is an awful lot of detail still to go in.

The painting is based on the aerial photo of the ground which is on post #61 of this thread.

When it is finished there will be a match in progress, with a crowd in attendance, as well as all sorts of trains and trams in view! So tons still to do!

The top left hand corner section (from the Evangelical Church up to the houses in Dagnall Park) is pretty much finished though. Even the pillar box is in the right place (it is still there and hasn't moved since the 1920's!)

Didn't some fans (including Ian King, Neil Witherow and Alan Russell) make a trip down there recently and discover what they believed to be the old stand, albeit in the wrong place? Did any of them take photos we can see?

Yes we did, a couple of weeks ago. Ian mentioned the visit on Palace Radio.

Alan has done an exclusive article for SE25 magazine, and I only think it is fair to wait until that has been published before other photos are shown on here. Hope that's ok.

That's fine. And perfectly understandable.

Looking forward to reading Alan's article

Just thought I'd alert people to something.

SE25 will not now be appearing for the last game of the season. Instead the club are folding a fair bit of the content (including my piece on the Nest) into a 92 page final matchday programme of the season v Cardiff.

AFAIK it's still going to be 3 quid, so no excuse not to get one

Superb article regarding our visit to "The Nest" in Saturdays bumper programme.

My personal theory is that the stand had it's roof lopped off and was moved very slightly to accommodate the vast cleaning shed. There re too many coincidences in the dimensions of the building, it's features, shape, height, number of rooms, bricked up doorways etc for it to be anything else.

I've got loads of photos, but for now here are a couple to kick things off

This is the station platform viewed from 'inside the ground'. Some fans would have bought a 1d platform ticket and watched the game from up there as it was cheaper than a match ticket (and would have also afforded a great view)

The building in question. You can even see the risers on the side of the stand (where the steps would have been in the seating tier). The bricks really are old here, there really is no logical explanation for the sloping profile other than it being the stand with its roof lopped off.

Thanks for the compliment Dave.

My personal theory having been there now and also having looked again from Selhurst station (and at photos of the whole stand from when it stood), is that it is the same building at the back (as above), albeit probably slightly moved.

The angle of the building at the top with no roof, is pretty much very similar to how the old stand looked in the corner.

Excellent article Alan. 10/10. (0/10 for the programme designer who decided that because the subject concerned the "olden days" the paper it was printed on had to look olden too, making it more difficult to read!) I found the whole thing fascinating, particularly the question of whether it had been moved or not. IMHO it seems more likely that the original plans were changed, and the stand is where it always was.

Full marks also for DE's terrific two photos above, the second one of which makes the explanation in the programme rather clearer to follow

Thanks for the excellent piece in the programme. I walk past Selhurst station nearly every morning on my way to work, can see the site opposite now in a different way.

Have you seen the "One Last Painting..." thread on here? Just wondered if the painting of The Nest stacks up with your own investigations?

Edit: Sorry, please ignore - off course it does if it was your Dad who painted it!

Very rare 1909 postcard of The Nest, with its first grandstand (the one that burned down)

Top thread this. A real bit of Palace history. Amazing to see the old ground outlines and stands preserved in the newer buildings.
