What kind of self-deceiving gobbledegook is this? Most Premier League Clubs are in a position to outspend Crystal Palace Football Club into the bankruptcy court, if they have a mind to sign Nugent. Anybody on BBS who doesn't understand this had better book them -selves an urgent appointment at the Maudsley Hospital in London, SE5 as a matter of urgency. Why on earth would Preston have to LOWER their demands if a PREMIER LEAGUE club showed an interest in signing the player? From Preston's point of view it is totally immaterial whether the club seeking the player comes from the Premier League, or the Championship or any other League in Europe or the rest of the world. One club's money is the same as any other's, provided it can prove it has enough money in the bank! The simple reality is that the club who offers Preston the most money will get the player, provided the player is agreeable to the move and to the terms he is offered by that club. In conclusion, for how long has Simon Jordan been in the habit of telling you to what lengths he is prepared to go to buy Nugent? Precisely when did he dis- close to you that he would be prepared to OUTSPEND ANY OTHER CLUB (irrespective of League or size) in order to secure the services of Dave Nugent? Most clubs could probably outspend us, but: - The top clubs won't want Da Nug - Most of the middle ranking clubs - 'Boro, Blackeye Rovers, Wigan - don't currently need a striker, so 'Danug' won't be going there - Of the promoted clubs, only Sheff Utd can probably afford Danug

ANY league be willing to reveal their interest in any desirable player prematurely? To do so would simply provoke a public AUCTION which would drive up the price to unrealisable levels. There is still plenty of time for Premier League clubs to allow Palace, Birmingham et al to reveal their negotiating hands before the big boys enter the serious bidding later in the process. Then there will be two main issues to be decided: 1. The size of the eventual fee and 2. the size of Nugent's eventual pay packet when the move is finally agreed. Both these factors will rule any Championship clubs out of the bidding. Indeed we may expect the size of Nugent's likely salary deal to be beyond the pay-structures of either Palace or Birmingham City. This is simply the every- day reality of "Sky" TV-sponsored professional football in 2006/7 It is all about the survival of the fittest and wealthiest at the expense of the also-rans. If Preston can afford to hold out for the highest bidder, much as Jordan did over Johnson last season, they have the chance of almost doubling their eventual profit for Nugent. and how many are of Nugent's quality? The laws of capitalist comp- etition apply in football too. Quality strikers are in short supply, so the prices of the best are bound to rise. |

Anyway, hopefully we'll be seeing Danug in Palace colours in the not too distant future. (That last sentence was merely an excuse to write 'Danug' again).
