I noticed that but he was chatting a lot to him at pitchside after the game - hopefully giving him a lot of encouragement.

At the time, I agree but when you see who came on and when, NW made the correct decisions, Doyle was able to disrupt the play and AG and Fryers shored up the defence. Love Zaha and Dwight, but we didn't need to chase the game and it was better to be solid defensively for the last 10-15 minutes and as we won, with Everton scoring their 2nd on a very soft penalty.

Doesn't change the fact that they thought he was useless and they were mugging us off getting money for him

If we don't finish top 4 I will be suprised. When players like gayle and zaha are on the bench you know europe beckons. Just hope we get a good draw in the third round qualifier so we can get in the group stages.

I thought Punch and Dann were both excellent. I know Dann gave away the pen, but it was unlucky.

The game was already stretched and in a different phase by then. Doyle wasn't expected or asked to provide a goal threat.

I thought it was McArthur that have away the pen...?

Caught a clip of Warnock at the end of the game where he quite clearly mouths, 'What a f**king win!'.

What a roller coaster supporting Palace! And all in one 90 mins.
We seemed completely outclassed during the first 15 or 20 mins (roughly). We were falling ever deeper to squeeze out the space between our players and yet they appeared able to pull us in and out at will. On the face of it we look as if we are playing in the same way as last year but then, without the ball, we had a bank of four at the back with a bank of 5 across in front of that leaving one up front. These lines were all but straight with Chamakh darting forward to challenge and Jedi sliding into the back 4 when the ball was in the air and we were pressured. Space was compressed and other than in the air, the back 4 was mostly sweeping up behind the midfield. The 2 wingers formed an extra fullback coming all the way back. Without Chamakh and his huge work rate we in effect are sitting deeper before making that challenge in the middle. This is in effect sucking Campbell backwards to compensate. Jedi hasn't been on form either and his lack of dominance has allowed teams to work their way thru what had been an impenetrable the middle at will. Last year our full backs had been excellent, this year, so so, with Ward struggling and different options being tried. Punch is defending but YB is coming back so far but switching off somehow (defensively). The first 20 mins epitomised this and we looked as if we were in for a right tonking and quickly went a goal behind. Then we gradually started to 'wake up and a bit of luck getting the pen and Jedi's sensational strike lifted us. We started to defend further forward and finished at least as if we deserved to be there. Jedi was slowly awakening and YB started to remind us of the player we saw last year with the ball at least. All 3 of our goals came from chasing lost causes. McArthur's one Man stampede to get taken out to win the pen was the first, then Campbell's leap to out jump Howard to score the second when most would tactfully have run a mile as the giant came out to claim. Finally Punch chasing down again to nick the ball before setting up the third for YB. Great stuff. Good subs and by the end we may not have been swaggering but we were starting to believe a little I think. Awesome and unbelievable result if you had watched the first 20 mins. Their first was great tactical play sucking out the middle and then driving back through it. How both CBS got exposed and then beached that far forward is difficult to fathom but good goal, well taken. Their pen was soft but they often are. Speroni 7.5 - his best game so far. Some good saves at key times but tempted to deduct a point for that awful kit. Couple of flaps but did everything he could do. Distribution still lacking and I swear he has shrunk vs the defenders but neither mattered. Contender for MOM. Kelly - 6.5 did well and I do think he has real potential. Strong, very quick and can defend up close or standing off. Positionally not quite right yet and needs nudging by Dann. Dann 6.5 - mixed bag today but still deserves the score. Unlucky with the pen I thought. Some clever defending against a very mobile and fluid attack. Delaney 6.5 - battling performance. Stretched for pace a few times but did well. Ward 6 - left exposed by YB but not found the last 10% of his form yet. I don't think he is handling LB that well this year and slightly surprised Zekhi hasn't been given a go there but CapitalCup beckons I assume. Puncheon -7.5 MOM likely not that popular a choice but I thought he was very professional, constantly winning the ball and making ground and even teeing up YB when tempting for him to shoot. Very good game. McArthur 6.5 - good game, works hard, good control and can make time when he has the ball. Great passing and of course won the pen. Great potential for us. Jedi 7 - extra bump for dragging himself into better form than of late. No way as dominant as last year but a step forward. Magic pen strike. Ledley 7 - another quiet but hugely effective performance. We missed him. Bolasie - 7 - bit worried that he lost his defensive concentration but he has certainly got his attacking Mojo back :-) unlucky to hit the bar but great goal anyway, composed. Campbell 6.5 - tempted to score higher to compensate for the neg he gets. Intelligently using position, pace and effort to lead the line. Great header to score the second against all odds. Brave header. Played on despite injury. Worried for him at Palace as I think some of the the crowd often. would prefer mindless waste of energy. Shame. Subs all solid enough. Warnock picked it, pleased for him. Long seasok ahead though. Awesome result!!!

Massive credit to the players for turning this one around - we were abject in the first part of the match, but actually ended deserved winners. I thought Campbell did well with his goal, but we do seem to have an issue with isolating our forwards so far this year, whether that's him not working hard enough or just not being suited to the role I don't know, but it's been the same for Gayle. Doyle looked as though he understood what's required, but can he do it from the start and does he still have goals in him? Jury still out on all our striker options currently for me. Chuffed for Bolasie, pleased with the midfield three. Don't think we look as compressed at the back as we should but the spirit is clearly still there for all to see so in general a very good performance, a great result and a much happier set of fans. Good couple of weeks for Palace. |
