Perhaps playing him in the correct position may help too

Showed glimpses of what he offers once the tactics became a bit more expansive. Ran at 2 or 3 defenders and took an early shot with power that sailed over. He will come good and seemed to take to an unfamiliar role relatively well.
I like the idea of him feeding off Chimakh, who looked very decent.

I think we should all judge Gayle when he finally receives the ball in the final third.

Absolutely, where Gayle was playing yesterday was nothing out the ordinary for him. He thrives on latching onto balls played through the defence and finishing them. He doesn't appear to be the sort to be able to pick the ball up in a deeper position and make things happen. At least not yet anyway, people forget he's still going to be pretty raw having played in the Football League for only just over a year now. I think he's going to come good, but he's young and raw so will make mistakes. He needs time to adjust and once he does he will be superb. It's a shame we didn't sign Bent because not only would it have taken the pressure off him a bit but he would've learnt so much. |

Which all makes the fee we paid seem excessive. Can't quite shake that feeling.
But that's not his fault and hopefully he will be a big success, has the right attributes but now needs to show the right attitude, work-rate and find that bit of luck to be in the right place at right time. |

Definitely needs more coaching - at one stage he was playing in the hole and didn't seem to know what to do. That will come in time

He was practiaclly being asked to play two positions yesterday, Centre mid and striker. It was always going to be a very difficult task and I thought he did ok.

He played alright but did seem rather unsure what to do and for the money spent I would have expected someone a bit more polished

For those who remember looking forward to seeing big money signings play, only to find they couldn't kick the bloody ball, he was ok. I'm thinking of the likes of Gareth Taylor or, further back, Mike Flanagan.

Agreed - I liked the look of him (from the TV).

He's just the type of player you need to play in the right positon.
He's not a winger and he cant play in the hole.

I liked what I saw considering the opposition and the positions he had to cover. He worked hard for the team, looked lively and had some nice touches. Whatever happens, he's going to learn loads this season and be a better player by the end of it.

This. Have never seen a CF played behind the advanced midfield before, totally nuts.

Watching Gayle during the Ian Holloway BBC training ground feature just made me want him to succeed even more, not just for us but for him. He seems a good egg, certainly had a good shot in that brief clip and good to see him enjoying himself.

I think most people would against a team as good as Spurs. They are really rather good.

there was certainly an element of rabbit in headlights yesterday but I completely understand that. He's a young lad, our record signing, playing in an atmosphere I doubt he's ever experienced. The way the crowd reacted to his shot was spot on - Palace at their best. Encouraging him and being patient. Can't wait for him to score!!
