Hilarious that some people seem to think they know Holloway's plans for the rest of the season. I don't think he knows himself yet.

I think Gayle will have to adapt to playing that inside forward role - it's very rare for teams to have the luxury of playing two up front and whichever position he's in, he's still going to be expected to pass the ball, beat players and put some crosses in.
I did find it interesting how deep Chamakh was prepared to go when he came on though, and the amount of ground he was able to cover. Seems to me he has the attributes to be able to replace the central attacking midfielder and allow a shorter man to play in front of him.

He was always going to struggle out wide in his first PL game in a defence-heavy side against pacy full-backs. It really doesn't mean he was poor as some have made out. |

----- Jedinak Campaña Grandin Chamakh Williams ----------- Gayle Or similar to how we finished the Spurs game but with a slightly different line-up (front three play deeper than strikers but make forward runs): ----- Jedinak Campaña -------- Dobbie Gayle Chamakh Philips

If we aren't going to use Gayle as the central point of our attack, he should be used in a similar way to how Villa are using Agbonlahor or Weimann.

Some major formation confusion going on here. Here's my view, which will probably just add more confusion to proceedings.
Last season - 1 striker, 2 wide players: ------------Speroni------- Ward --Gabbidon-Delaney--Moxey ---------Jedinak--KG---------- -----------Garvan--------- ---Zaha----Murray---Bolaise Sunday - 1 striker, 0 wide players: -------------Speroni--------- Ward---Delaney--Gabbidon--Moxey ----KG-----Jedinak----Garvan --------Dobbie---Gayle------ ------------Wilbraham------- I don't think either formation really suits Gayle. Things will change again though as new players come in and as Holloway trys different ideas. |

Not making excuses but we have 3 or 4 (I include Parr as he has played both LB and LW)wide players, Thomas, Bolaise, Parr, Gradin or which 3 are injured and 1 just joined the club. Tbf not many teams in the Prem could field wingers in the same situ we are in.

It's a really interesting picture. Interesting how Ward gets forward more than Moxey and just how narrow we were playing. Wonder if Delaney is further forward because of his 'stopper' role, because he supports the attacks more, or both.
I'd like to see a picture for average positions after the 3 subs. I'd guess Gayle and Phillips would be further forward than Chamakh.

Notice how far advanced their full backs are, Walker in particular. They will have set up to attack using the full backs anyway, but our narrow shape will have forced them even more wide. And for about 50 minutes, our shape worked, as we restricted them to three chances in the first half. Anyway I'm going massively off topic here, and I hate it when people do that. I'll share more of my thoughts on this elsewhere!

On the subject of Gayle, he was the outfielder with the fourth worst pass completion % this weekend, in the entire Premier League (Wilbraham was the worst). Yes, I know he's not really a midfielder, just sayin' though.

Look forward to him playing with Campana, someone with more composure and ability and on the ball to look up and pick out gayle's run. He made a great one on sunday but moxey (i think) played it back to damo to hoof instead
