It's difficult to compare the two because they're both different types of player and both equally as effective as right backs. Clyne is more a wing back whilst Ward is more a traditional attacking right back. John Humphrey, in my opinion, is the best right back Palace have ever had. Ward has the potential to be even better and I hope he fulfils it with us.

If we had both at the moment, Clyne would be playing left back.

Clyne edges it for me at the moment, but we have been blessed to have two excellent right-backs.
Can see both of them staying in the Prem for a very lon time. |

I loved Pembo but Humphrey was absolute class and most definitely an upgrade. Should've played for England and was on standby on a couple of occasions.

Nat was easily one of my favourite players at Palace when he was here, I'll always remember the 2-4 away win at Reading in 2009 when I think about him or Moses, both were superb that night.
Says a lot that I think Ward is much better, both going forward and defensively. Solid. |

Ward shades it. Clyne better going forward but Ward good in the air and defensively better

We're pretty lucky to have had two full backs like that in a short space of time.
Ward as an all-round player probably edges it, but thinking about that Old Trafford game Clyne was so explosive. Awesome to watch.

It's rare I disagree with PK about mid 80s to mid 90s Palace, but whilst Humphrey was good, I don't think he was that good. In fact, I think over our history (pre 2004), right back has been one of our weaker positions (for example, I'd say Sansom, Shaw, Cole and Gordon were all better at left back than any of our right backs over the same period). However, in more recent years we've seen a marked upturn - with Boyce, Clyne and now (if he carries on like he's been playing) Ward.

I actually think Ward is better defensively and going forward. Clyne's pace was his biggest asset. It meant that he could get beaten but recover and win the ball back. Ward has a better footballing brain - his positioning is better, his anticipation is better. He's also got the bonus of being a big, strong lad so is obviously much better in the air.
I think they'll both go on to play for England. Two of the best players we've had in the last 10 years and both still young.

They are both obviously good players offering great potential.
Ward edges it in the air and Clyne edges it (at the moment) with his contribution to build up play and 'beating players'. I would have to say Ward's attacking play is improving all the time. Both have great stamina and good pace. If I had to pick one today I would pick Ward. Clyne's relative frailty in the box in the air being more of a risk in the Premier with so many 'giants' appearing in the forward line these days who naturally drift to the far post giving him problems. Ward is the opposite adding strength to the centre backs in the air. This season this trade off makes sense. A year ago it would have been Clyne hands down due to both their progression and the division we were in. Both great players.

Before the season you would take Clyne at the drop of a hat.
Ward three games in has been nigh on man of the match each game. Hard to tell so early on but couldn't look past Ward at the moment. |

Ward is probably better defensively, and has the height advantage. I always thought Clyne was poor in the air.
I also think Ward is better going forward (he looks more likely to score) but Clyne had the pace to get back in position. Ward won't get in the England team because he doesn't play for a top 6 side. |

He probably won't whilst with us, but it depends how he does against those teams. Played well against Spurs.

I would like to think that they are both very very similar in ability but Ward has much more potential.
He is a bit taller than Clyne and he wins his fair share of headers, he can play as a wing back too. His work rate is phenomenal, he has quite nifty foot work. Clyne can read the game much better and I think his defending overall is better. I would have more confidence in Ward having a shot on goal than Clyne, but then I would prefer Clyne at the end of a last ditch tackle. 50/50 |
