My two penneth is that even if Jerome was still here his hassling of defenders would be fruitless because he would be the only person in the team pressing. On the few occasions Gayle did try to press against Burnley our midfield would casually allow one of their midfielders to get the ball off the defence without a hint of pressure. CamJam or not, if our midfielders are going to stand 25 yards away from our forwards and allow oppostion teams to stroll leisurely into our half then no amount of pressure up front will matter.

I think we have really missed him this season - we defended from the front last year, which contributed hugely to our brilliant defensive record. And, I will never forget his clinical bottom corner finish at Everton which sealed our safety. I never understood why we didn't sign him up in the summer even as fourth choice or something. I assume that must have been a Pulis decision, as he wouldn't have cost much.

Gayle Vs Cameron Jerome Doyle Vs Murray Fryers Vs Parr McArthur Vs KG Only questionable one there is Doyle and Murray but then there is the option, to bring Murray back in January if we are going to play him regularly. The question on Jerome is whether we should have spent £2m and £30-40k a week on a player who would be a bench player or maintain him starting with Gayle sidelined? Would Jerome have joined us under a manager who sidelined him before? |

My own view is that they thought they could get someone better than Cameron Jerome a tall target man who could score but for whatever reason that deal never happened. I think Campbell was a moody influenced signing not to replace Jerome but for the price seen as potential investment and cover for Gayle. Murray may have been seen as cover but wanted regular games so they panicked and ended up with Doyle to replace that cover. I just hope that they were trying to find that tall target man and are looking now as a strong skillful forward to combine with Gayle and score from headers from our good wingers would have seen us safe someone like pelle at southampton. I hoped we would have gone for slimani

Yes we do miss him.
It would not be the case if we had brought in a replacement. I would have preferred CJ to Doyle, Campbell and AJ to be honest. But we have them. No Murray. Gayle should not be expected to lead the attack. Strange situation regarding the strikers. |

As most people rightly acknowledge Jerome had an incredible work ethic, was fast, tall and strong and given the current crop of forwards would certainly add something. Jerome however cannot finish and his goal scoring record illustrated by his awful record. A striker needs to demonstrate a good goal return and he didn't. Technically he was not good enough for the PL hence he's now playing in the Championship. He definitely did a job for us and Pulis's tactical skills and pragmatic strategy with 2 defensive banks playing deep, with a willing runner closing down from attack worked pretty well, however with the emergence of Gayle (a natural finisher) and the return of Murray and with the hope of landing Wickham Pulis must have looked at other options and possibly modifying his strategy around better quality players. Poor Gayle on Sarurday was having to deal with hoof after hoof after hoof. It wS horrible to watch a diminutive striker who can finish, with pace to burn, having to chase high hoofed ball after high hoof ball with no support from central midfield. There was no cohesiveness (so disjointed) and so 1 dimensional. Our midfield need far more imagination and creativity. The midfield needs someone who can offer an other attacking dimension, basically someone who can pass and move and link up the play. Williams did it in spells in the short time he was on and Bannan can do it. Obviously Chamakh is excellent in that role. It was a sad sight to see Gayle chasing long high balls all day. |

Which is where Doyle was playing and where Glenn Murray is now playing. AJ wasn't even playing at all! Not sure that many (if any) Premiership teams would buy any of our current forwards. Save for Chamakh, who is the only Premier League quality striker we have.

The way we play needs a target man with pace.
We let Jerome go back and the only like for like is Doyle. I actually think Doyle looked ok on Saturday, he reminded me a bit of Shane long. Id definately dive him a go. Campbell was a strange signing, really dont see him starting too many games and being sucessfull. Only other option is to play Chamakh upfront but I dont think he ever looks that dangerous there. |

Bigger concern is how we do up top against big teams. For me Jerome came into his own when it was backs to the wall stuff.
None of our strikers have the physique to do what he did (particularly Chelsea at home where he gave Cahill and Terry a lot of headaches making them have to deal with every long ball. Defeinately defending from the front. Without his presence to give the oppo something to worry about we could easily be looking at a couple of thrashing a this year as teams can just push forward and afford to leave less cover. |

[QUOTE=GreatGonzo;11980656]Lets at least compare like for like.
Gayle Vs Cameron Jerome Doyle Vs Murray Fryers Vs Parr McArthur Vs KG Only questionable one there is Doyle and Murray but then there is the option, to bring Murray back in January if we are going to play him regularly. Gayle was in the squad last year so that is not a like for like that you demand. You have amazing knowledge of a Spuds fourth choice left back to say he is better than Parr "without question". Same with KG and McArthur. I know nothing about him other than he looked quite good in the cup game and my Scottish brother-in-law reckoned our management must be on crack to pay so much for him What I do know is I saw KG have a lot of very good games for us and when he didn't play we missed him.

Was the signing I was hoping for this summer. Made us play high up the pitch. Good signing for Norwich they will walk the championship.

I've always rated cam jam last year. Most of his critics were people who thought paying 80k a week for Caulker is a good idea.
Didn't anyone see the game? Doyle looked pretty good out there.

Perfect TYPE of striker for us - pacy and strong. Never any problem with him leading the line on his own. We've brought in 2 others (doyle and campbell) and promoted one other (gayle) and there are doubts that any of them can do the job we want.
If we were getting rid of Cam Jam we needed an upgrade not a downgrade. We haven't even got a downgrade. Our striking options lack variety and whilst I believe we are now well stocked elsewhere it is worrying how predictable we are up top.

To be fair it is no great surprise that he is scoring having moved a level down. Murray, Parr, Wilbs (2 levels down) have done the same. It is a totally different ball game in the championship as we well know, in addition, as noted above, Norwich do have a very strong line up.
Having said that, he worked well in the rigid system that we had last season, but even Pulis was happy to let him go over the summer. |

I'd say he was one of a number of players (along with Parr, KG and Murray) who weren't made to feel as though they had any future at the club and therefore chose to leave, even though we haven't adequately replaced them. As squad players they would, respectively, have been improvements on Wilbraham, Moxie and O'Keefe, with Murray as an alternative to Chamak. For me, Pulis mismanaged the squad to the point where he thought he could force Parish's hand over transfers. We know SP won't blink in those situations, and thanks to that we still have a club.
