Stuart McCall - Future Manager?
Rumour in Scotland started by the Scottish Sun that Palace are after Motherwell manager Stuart McCall who's also in the Scottish National Team set-up as part of their backroom staff.
Here's the article that's in today's Sun: NEIL WARNOCK wants old pal Stuart McCall to join him at Crystal Palace — and quit Motherwell and Scotland. Warnock is keen to have highly-rated McCall in his new-look backroom team at Selhurst Park. McCall worked with Warnock at Sheffield United and was a major part of their promotion success. Both left when the Blades were controversially relegated but the duo have stayed close. McCall has led Motherwell to record highs in the SPFL and took them into Europe annually despite a shrinking budget. His work has also been recognised by Scotland boss Gordon Strachan, who acknowledges the role he has played in their revival as a coach in the national set-up. McCall is settled and is tipped for bigger jobs north of the border. But the lure of the Premier League may prove too much to resist. Palace would have to pay Motherwell compensation if McCall agrees to join them, but that is not a major problem as the figure is low. Warnock is bringing in another old ally in Kevin Blackwell but he will work only on a part-time basis, while a further coach, Ronnie Jepson, is joining as well. Palace co-chairman Steve Parish wants a potential future manager in the ranks, so it is a huge call over McCall. Link: To view the link you have to Register or Login |

The only potential manager I want was in the oppositions dugout yesterday, I doubt that even he will keep Burnley up though and approaching him at the end of the season, regardless of which league we are in, would be a good move in my opinion. He gave an interview the other week and it was like listening to SP, clearly understands the restrictions that Burnley have to operate under and how other parts of the clubs infrastructure need to be improved too, he's clearly a good motivator, tactician and level headed, a good front man for any club. He took a team up last season that weren't fancied for promotion and did it in style, no need to scrape through play offs, a tremendous achievement.
I wanted him ahead of Holloway, Dyche was treated poorly by Watford and Burnley have benefited. Our next manager was right in front of you yesterday Steve. Last edited by Penstone Eagle; 14-09-2014 at 08:25 AM. |

Time for someone to link the YT video of McCall pissed, and falling of the car after helping Bradford avoid relegation

Bit random, but this made me think about the topic.
McCall has good experience as a player and Captain/leader and then as Manager at Motherwell. I don't know enough about the latter to judge but the article intimates he has something. The thought prompted is, how would any manager good enough to manage us in 12-24 months be willing to come as second fiddle and how could we afford them plus Warnock? The only option would be a 'bet' on an ex-player wanting to move into management and startFing in the Prem is a tough ask. I like the idea of grooming future managers a la Liverpool of old but I doubt we will ever see it in the same way as Shankly, Paisley and Fagan etc. So who are the next ex players to move into management? Neville is an obvious one but Murphy talks well on MOD and has a lot of experience. Dyche does look a good fit for us but best judged at the end of the season. So like the idea but unclear how it works for us

No point he hiring him, he will need a work permit from next friday and would be unlikely to get one.

I have to say it would be an excellent appointment to take Stuart McCall on board and be groomed as a future manager. Rightly or wrongly Warnock was appointed so needs to be backed fully by the board, with possibly the intentions of grooming a younger man to take over, on that basis McCall fits the bill perfectly also previously having worked with Warnock makes sense. However, it is vital we do not just discard our loyal current backroom staff as they are the backbone of the club when things go wrong.

Dyche has done really well but I wouldn't be too sure we could tempt him away from Burnley. Maybe but at the moment we are a level position.

Kit Symons might be a long shot on a future manager to groom. I was always very impressed by how he handled himself at Palace many moons ago while in charge temporarily. Comes across as a smart guy, very articulate (always had ambitions to be a pundit I think) and knows his football.
It is a long shot but if we are serious about bringing someone in with the raw material then I would say he has a head start over some. I still cant see an established manager moving in as a deputy and it would have to be someone looking for that first break. There would be worse.

I know we should be fully behind Warnock (as I expect most are). But the next manager will be very important and I believe we should be weighing up our options who will steer us in the right direction for the longer term. I will always go with Popovic, as a coach and what is achieved so far he's second to none. Was widely touted the Australia job and wanted by Cahill which says a lot. He's familiar with the setup and worked with a good few of the current players.

Dyche was very highly thought of when he was interviewed by Parish and Co but they went for Holloway which was the better choice at the time. We needed someone to come and hit the road running when DF left and the experience of IH was a no brainer. But Dyche interview was very good, very professional in a suit and came with a laptop presentation.
I'd think he must still be in future thoughts but who knows I quite like McCall, not sure he would leave to be no2 tho

Never understood this grooming next Manager , in reality we will appoint someone based on our needs at time . If we are in Premiership we will want someone ideally with Premiership experience , if we are relegated we will appoint someone who has experience of getting out of Championship .
