I thought GF might at least have had Wilf on the subs bench...

Let's get on a cup run, play a 3/4 strength side.
Hennessey Kelly Delaney Dann Fryers Zaha Bannan Ledley Bolasie Williams Gayle Subs: whoever doesn't need a rest or who needs to find some form. |

On one of the other threads you said Hangeland should never play for the club again. Or was that just one of your trolling hissy fit strops?

Hennessey
Mariappa Kelly Hangeland Fryers Pep Bannan Thomas Doyle Bolasie Gayle Give Kelly an opportunity to stake a claim as a centreback, Fryers for a starting place plus Doyle a chance to show what he's really got in his locker nowadays. The only alternative might be to swap out Bannan and Guerdioura and see what Ledley and McArthur can do as a midfield pair, though a. bit harsh on the two I've got in there as if they're not going to play even in the cup, how can they push for a regular starting place and b. depending on how weak or strong a team Newcastle put out, might not really provide enough of a test to really say that a Ledley/Mc combo can work in the league. |

Why start these threads so early? Surely at least wait till after the next game!

Probably because maestro beat him to the Everton team suggestion thread. This thread has been started ridiculusly early GF, what's the point? I think I know

I'm not totally sure he wants to at CB unless he's told you. He's not a CB nor does he desire to play there from what I've been told.

...basically saying that he loves playing right-back, but has performed CB in England U21 games plus academy games, has all the attributes, great to be able to play in two positions etc. Yes those quotes are from his time at Liverpool, but don't see why they shouldn't count now either. If he wants to focus on keeping Ward out the team, good luck to him, however he's our player and it's not unreasonable to see whether his talents could be better used in a different position. Looking at him, at this stage he could well be the second best right back we have - he might prove to be the best in time of course. Equally, he's certainly correct to say he has the right attributes to play elsewhere, so why not see if he could turn out to be the best or second best centre-back at the club in a game like this? |

It was actually a fellow player (Paddy actually) who I bumped into in Costa in Hayes high street and mentioned about Kelly and he suggested he's certainly looking at playing full back and would probably be 4th choice maybe 5th choice at CB in current squad. I'm guessing.... Dann, Delaney, Hangeland, Mariappa and maybe Paddy himself now Warnock here. But who knows. TBH I actually think Kelly is arguably as good as Ward at RB given a run. Like them both TBF

I do accept that those Kelly quotes were back when he was looking to get back in the side after injury, so he's never going to say he only ever wants to be considered a right back - especially if there's a chance of a run out elsewhere! Plus I agree with you that Kelly could well be as good a right-back as Ward, just that we shouldn't rule out Kelly as a CB just yet simply because the team comes first - and it might be that say a Ward/Dann/Kelly/Fryers combo turns out to be more solid than a Kelly/Dann/Delaney/Ward or whatever. Genuinely think that while Kelly might be 4th or 5th choice CB now, he might actually have a better chance of shifting Hangeland/Delaney from the first-11 on a regular basis than Ward - this all assumes tho that a. Fryers is good enough to claim left-back for himself in the long run and b. Kelly does have the right attributes beyond just height to make a good CB. Game like this might be a good chance to find out a little more about both those ideas! |

I don't know. Is this one of yours? I'm only predicting the side. I wouldn't have Hangeland in there myself but I expect he will play.

A game we could well do without. 100% focus on the league. Let the reserves play and if we win all well and good.
