It's not really luck: when your squad is as thin as ours and you can't afford to rotate players they are much more likely to be overworked and get injured.

Hodgson said yesterday that only one injury was muscle related, the rest were trauma related that are due to accidents on the pitch. No expert, but seems to suggest that this year injuries may be more down to luck. Agree on thinness of squad, but there I
Is no doubt in my mind that players are fitter now than 12 months ago

Mins you looking at our signings in recent years it wouldn't surprise me if the medical was like a bodged MOT.
But it is not just Palace Burnley may be be having their best season for years results wise but this has been achieved despite a terrible run of injuries.

In the 4th game (against Palace), skipper and goalkeeper Tom Heaton dislocated his shoulder and is STILL out while midfield stalwart Dean Marney (ACL) has not kicked a ball this season.

Just as he was really starting to play well, Robbie Brady (ACL) was ruled out for the season while Jon Walters has just returned from an injury suffered in September.

Record signing Chris Wood is currently injured and has missed half a dozen or so games while the defence has been particularly hard hit with Matt Lowton, James Tarkowski, Ben Mee and Stephen Ward ALL missing three games or more with various injuries - Ward the worst with a knee injury which has him still sidelined after missing the last 6 matches.

In the Boxing Day 2-2 draw against Man U at Old Trafford, only ONE of the regular back five played - the line-up being Pope, Bardsley, Long, Mee and Taylor instead of Heaton, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward.

I do agree with the poster who mentioned Brighton - they've done very well (been very lucky) to avoid injuries this season.

Didnít realise Burnley had been that hard hit. West Ham and Newcastle seem to be particularly hard hit with injuries. Brighton are oddly lucky with lack of injuries. I think if you even just took knockaert, Murray and/or Gross out the equation you would see them sink.

Think both us and Burnley have pretty much all of the first choice back 4 out injured today.

Could be a 5-5 thriller!

Townsend's injury could have been the result of him playing one game too many. I was surprised he wasn't on the bench or rested altogether. Schlupp's injury was just unlucky.

Or fundamental problem is that we often sign injury prone players. There was no doubt that Tomkins and Sakho for example would get injured regularly, RLC too.

Wickham is a crock and has been for three years but his injury record apparently wasn't too bad before he joined us.

Yup, and I bet if you asked supporters of other clubs, 99 percent of them would say that their club is unlucky with injuries which should tell you that it effects everyone

One issue of course is that injury prone players are going to be a bit cheaper than those who aren't at a similar level.

Honestly beyond that I think its two separate issues, on one hand our defence being naturally very combative is going to mean more injuries but on the other we have more players going forward who are easy targets yet we don't get the same protection for them from refs the big sides do.

We have 9 players out (or probably out), for the remainder of the season.
You can add to that, arguably 7 others who have been out for lengthy periods and are trying to get back to a consistent level of performance.

3 new signings who are not yet considered ready or fit enough to start.

There are one or two others who are coming back from long term injuries & are not yet match fit.

Not one other senior player in the squad who has not suffered some sort of injury, however minor, and missed game time as a result.

I can't see one player who has been ever present this season.

To add to our woes, so many of the injuries have been to key players who would be regarded as automatic first choices.

What's worse is that the situation is not getting any better. If Roy manages to keep us up with all this adversity, it will be a fantastic achievement.

No, it's not just us, but we have been very unfortunate in suffering more than any other Prem club relative to the strength of our squad.

I can't recall an injury crisis of this magnitude

The squad depth doesn't help but surely we have to look at the backroom staff involved in keeping players fit and healthy?

You'd say that if the injuries were soft tissue injuries from over/under training - whereas they are largely contact injuries. Only Kelly (that I can recall) has a muscular injury.

Jules - back
Wilf - knee (in tackle)
Punch - knee (in tackle)
Dann - knee (in tackle)
Wickham - knee
Souare - thigh (car crash)
RLC - long term back issue
Schlupp - ankle (in tackle)

Which points to us being beyond unlucky - I can't ever think of a squad so ravaged by contact injuries. Injuries have defined our season - not only in our playing staff but recruitment too if the Schurrle story is true.

Combining this with us with our ridiculous attempts to prove xG invalid would suggest that someone, probably God, really hates Palace.

It is jolly bad luck that we didnít sign a keeper, or a winger, or a 3rd striker.

Jolly bad luck indeed.

As others have said these arenít that type of injury. We saw that under pardew with constant muscle injuries because the players were so unfit. This is just ******* savagery

Sakho, punch and Dann bought on for over stretching for a ball they wonít win sadly

I think the timing of this thread shows how long ago it started to feel like a curse. The regular waves of updates on it show how sustained it is. Others have problems but this is the worst run of injuries Iíve ever seen in football and so many of them for such a long time
