(Of course not).
He said the same about our other strikers (mainly Ayew and Sorloth) when he said we had no options up front to explain why he persists with wingers. He's said this a few times in press conferences - often when challenged as to why he doesn't always use his subs. I could go back and find these examples for you if I had the time and inclination.

What he's just said about Wickham is really unnecessary and in no way helpful to the player.

But you continue to ignore the facts when it suits you.

Just maybe Connor is not as ready to start games as he has said and that Roy is going to ease him back into the team rather than risk him picking up another injury by overdoing it.

Connor has played very little football to get up to speed following such a long lay-off and may at this time be better suited to a few cameo appearances from the bench.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Hodgson adopting that approach. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. It's more what he said that wasn't ideal.

Agreed, there must be something in it, as Roy is media savvy and knows his comments will be analysed in detail.

That said, I think he could have been more complementary to some of our players and less critical of others, this season. Things like not backing wilf a bit more after he complained about being kicked all over the park, I also think there was a dig at Meyer after he subbed him.

Roy has let himself down with his comment. Really hope that Connor comes on and scores to stuff those words down Roy's throat. There is a reason Roy failed with Liverpool and England and that is the leadership to inspire players.

Have you heard any players criticise him, anywhere?

I don't see any issue with Roy stating the truth, and neither should you.

Connor is way off a start in terms of fitness and first-team sharpness.

Just heard the interview and yes Wickham doesn't look fit . It was just the way RH answered the question as in " based on the performance against Chelsea , no he is not ready to start a game " Was all a bit abrupt .
Could be because RH had taken the huff in the first post match interview when he was asked shouldn't Palace have been a bit more positive . Then in the 2nd interview ( looking forward to Wolves ) , RH was asked is there any reason why the team isn't playing with more freedom as it did last season . RH again was not happy with question .

This chat about reintroducing players slowly, shows such a massive lack of urgency, verging on complacency. Wickham wants to get stuck in, and told the press that he is fit enough to start, though probably not to play 90 mins. That may have been what set RH off, especially if it was the same journo who spoke to Wickham.
Anyone who has looked at our fixtures would have seen that we have a couple of other "two games a week spells" (which obviously favours the big clubs). We can ponce around playing safety first, while our winnable games pass by, or take a few calculated risks. The return of Benteke looks interminable and the 'return-date' is about as reliable as the start-up of cross-rail.
Eventually, we will just run out of games and time.
This strange assumption that 'we are too good to go down' seems to be shared by fans and management. I just don't see where it comes from.

Had a good game today, got himself in the right place at the right time.

Well chuffed for him, some real mental strength to get himself back after such a long time. Credit to the medical staff as well, they did loads of stuff that I don't understand, but they obviously did it well.

That was for all those that said we'd never see him again. Played very well. Scored and was key for the second. Won a lot of headers too. Pleased for him

Pardon the old cliché but he's like a new signing.

Welcome back Connor even though you spell your name wrong.

Finally given a chance by Roy. Scores a striker’s goal and leads the line. Excellent work Connor, hopefully you will now get the chance you deserve. Ayew has had enough and has frittered them away because he doesn’t have your class. Only took Roy a couple of months to realise but at least he eventually did!

Don't keep turning positives into negatives mate. Life is too short. Roy has, correctly, staggered his reintroduction.

Comments from RH after game

Wickham: “He’s worked hard to get where he is and it’s good that he’s had the chance today. Had it been a league game then he wouldn’t have had that chance because Jordan Ayew would have played in the centre-forward position, but I decided to rest Jordan so Connor could play and he took the opportunity which is very credible and I’m pleased about.
“It has been two-and-a-quarter years [since his last start] and for him to play 70 minutes and get a goal, things can’t get much better than that for him, but if you suddenly believe it’s going to be like it was four or five years ago when he was in his prime, I think that is too much to ask. He’s got to keep himself fit enough to get out for all the training sessions, which is something he’s been doing now for the last five or six weeks.”
