Why didn't they use VAR when Stones gave away what should have been a clearer penalty earlier in the match (when the attacker caught him on the ball)?

Good point. I think the ref was looking for one to balance it out. Staggered the Italian didnít go down.

He had every right to, Brian

Still dont know who i best 11 is. Tarkowski had a good game but Italy, and Holland on friday were very ordinary.

Rashford looked off the pace in both games, while Ox showed why is behind Wilshire.

Henderson really isnt the answer, so i can understand the new system as it is designed to limit the exposure to our relatively week central midfield and focus our efforts wide where we have a good amount of versatile full backs (Tripper, Walker, Rose, Young, Gomez) along with a number of inside forwards/falso 9s/10s (Alli, Sterling, Rashford, Llalanna, Lingard).

Also what the two games highlighted to me is how special Wilf is. Every time he gets the ball for Palace i almost expect magic. I dont get that with any England player.

The most sad and disturbing thing about England is that effing band. I know the atmosphere is dead at Wembley these days but they are still playing exactly the same tunes they did 15 years ago, and it was annoying then.
I like Rashford, but he needs much more experience/development. He was aimless yesterday.

Still only 20 luckily, plenty of time for that. May play for the wankers but I still quite like him.

In the Aussie rugby last week, Brisbane were given a penalty to win the game. The incident was really minor and didn't affect anything but the ref gave it as a penalty because technically it was a foul. The player was falling over anyway, wasn't going to be able to offload the ball but because the opponent touched him on the way, the ref gave a penalty to Brisbane. The commentator called it a 'gotcha' penalty and likened it to driving 61 in a 60 zone. Giving the pen because he can, which makes it silly by the defender but really fussy by the referee.

The commentator was then really angry after the game. He said how he doesn't want to see games won like this and how every game he watches now feels like a refereeing exhibition rather than a game of rugby.

This is how last night feels. To me, the ball was gone, the player on the way down, and because there was a defender near him and going in the same direction, they collided.

So yeh, definition is it can be given as a foul but if you're going to give fouls for things like that then football will become non contact soon enough.
Most Association Football experts agree that it became the "world game" because it has simple, easy to understand, rules, and only really needs a ball. The "International Board" when dominated by English old buffers, never changed anything. Since the meddling, corrupt, international sports bureaucracy began to control the game, the rules have become increasingly opaque and hard to apply, (see the offside rule), and now it is even unclear who is reffing the game. Some long-standing rules have just become "obsolete" (obstruction, foul throws, GK paces), without any discussion.
We can look forward to lots more meddling and complications in the future. And lots of opportunities to help favoured interests.
