Indeed, although Southgate specifically made those comments to partly justify why he didn't chase Wilf. He insinuated that if Wilf wasn't desperate to play for England, that was the end of the story. I suspect Wilf could have easily chosen either but his mind was made up by the fact that IC made him feel wanted, whereas Southgate didn't.

Didn’t it have as much to do with Henderson? And the managers before Southgate?

I think what made up Zaha’s mind was the first England squad after Townsend had joined. Zaha had been on fire, Townsend had been embarrassingly poor. We all know who Southgate picked and who he didn’t

Gomez, Jagielka, Lallana, Agbonlahor, Dorigo, Ehiogu, Zamora, Viljoen, Bonetti, Pejic, Rodriguez. All good old English names. Difficult decision for the lad when the time comes though .

Really interesting one this. He looks a great player from what I've seen. He has no international experience at youth level. Just came unnoticed through the Man U academy. Dad is Scottish, but born in Lancaster and I believe lived in England his whole life. May come down to whether he feels English or Scottish. I feel I would go for England given the chance to win things and be at major tournaments but obviously the England team serially under performs and brings pressure. What would you do?
England .

Southgate likely to miss out again due to his ridiculous requirement for the player to beg to play for England. 'I'm not sure it's for me to sell that to you' he says. Prick.
