I follow both clubs. Croydon FC were originally known as Croydon Amateurs and have always been based at the Arena in Albert Road, South Norwood.
Their hey-day was the mid to late 70's when they moved up the old Isthmian League ladder (it was then sponsored by Rothmans) to become a top local club. The FA Cup ties were certainly the highlights, with Millwall being held 2-2 (at Selhurst Park) in a 1st Rnd Tie in 1979 (Croydon lost 3-2 in the replay at the Den). There were never big crowds at Croydon Arena, even the 100 plus crowds that did go were mainly locals who usually followed Palace too. The club really has struggled for the past 20 years and even in the "good old days" the crowds were never alot more than 100, because most people in the area follow Palace or one of the "big" pro clubs, many people don't even realise there is another club in SE 25 apart from Palace! I live closer to Thornton Heath Pond and in the late 80's, two local teams : Norwood FC who already played at Mayfield Road and Wansworth FC who had no ground of their own merged. After a few years of being known as Wandsworth & Norwood FC, they changed their name to Croydon Athletic FC. They played in the Spartan League, which featured teams from the "other side" of London and even further out. I've always followed their progress and they have built up a very nice ground at Mayfields and have now become a very respectable non-league club - it's a bit like the Charlton story on a smaller scale. Unlike Charlton though, the fans don't get bussed in from Kent. THe fans don't really "bus in" from anywhere really! This is the main problem with local football around Croydon, we have two good clubs that are both quite hidden away in the back-roads and it's not always that tempting to go along and watch them. Croydon Athletic's big local derby these days is at Tooting & Mitcham. Tooting now play in a very ood stadium at Bishopsford Road (Palace's old Mitcham Training Ground!). It is lierally the other side of Mitcham Common from Croydon Athletic - you can get there in about 5 minutes by Tram! I doubt if there were more than 10 people cheering Croydon on at T&M last season - on a Bank Holiday in a 400 strong crowd - and both clubs were going for promotion!

For anyone interested Croydon FC lost their opener away to Whitstable Town to a 2nd minute goal. They play in the same league as Greenwich Borough who i think we got a few players from in the 80s and early 90s. |

My mate (James Wastell) has signed for Croydon Athletic from Whyteleafe. Absolutely quality keeper.

If you know where Croydon Crematorium is, off Thornton Road, a couple of roads further up towads Thornton Heath Pond, is Silverleigh Road. Follow this road into Trafford Road (Silverleigh Road "forks"(!) away here) and Trafford Road then becomes Mayfield Road (seems complicated, but it's all one road!). At the bottom of Mayfield Road, there is a narrow entrance with a very rough drive (turn left) follow it along and you will see the sign for Croydon Athletic FC, the club is about 200 yards along this drive. The open pitches just outside the ground used to be the home of Thornton Heath Cricket Club, one of the best local cricket sides in Surrey in the 70's. But, just like Croydon FC, yobs kept burning their clubhouse down and they folded up - a real shame.

wouldn't say he was short, about 6 foot. Was probably playing for Worthing in 2003, but I could be wrong. You won't see a better keeper at this level of football. (But I am biased as he is my mate )

Went to see them play against a team called Eggham last year. The game finished 0-0 and was probably the most boring game i've seen in my whole life. The only chance of the match a Croydon player blasting the ball over the bar in the last minute.

Croydon F.Cs. other great claim to fame was having a very good ladies team which won the ladies F.A. cup. Then unsurprisingly it all went t*ts up and they disbanded. It was the top team though in it's day beating Arsenal ladies etc.

having checked my details Croydon ladies won the cup twice, beating Liverpool and Doncaster Belles. The third time they were in the final they lost to Arsenal (3-2)

The only thing that puts me off attending more Rams games is the price, £8 to watch a grade above pub football, £2 programme, and it's here we go again!!!, I would rather save my money for Palace, I only went to three games last year, I will try to see them a bit more often, They are a very friendly club, with a fantastic youth programme.

They never disbanded, they were looking for a professional club to associate with to enable them to run more viably. Palace were in administration at the time and Charlton Athletic ladies is what used to be Croydon. |

Didn't they become Charlton Ladies?
Palace were in administration and couldn't afford the franchise I think. Beat me to it!

Charlton poached somthing like eight of the first team, The FA were called in and Charlton were found guilty, But nothing , i think was actually done about it.
