Not a fan per se but his commentary reminds me of big England matches. Fair play for a long career, must love his football.

Also, do not want him to die...As for the man himself, he commentates on a football game....?????
Never really have taken much notice.

We had a bit of a laugh with him at Selhurst once.

Brian Moore was my all time favourite, JM comes out with too many cliches and seems to favour the "big" teams. I always thought that Barry Davies was the better of the two main BBC commentators.

Never liked him
One of the annoying commentators that pronounces Miguel as Migwell and struggles with most foreign names Never liked his 'you probably don't know this but I do' arrogance and his off the cuff quips seem contrived and over rehearsed Should have retired years ago. Good riddance to him

His commentary became in later years, a little forced and OTT, but have to say, his commentary for the 1990 semi final against Liverpool is a
thing of beauty. ‘Steve Coppell is standing....his team were 10 minutes away from Wembley let it be said...they’re now 3 minutes away from going out...but wait a moment...Thomas...Staunton...GRAY! GRAAAY! 3-3!!! ANDY GRAY FOR PALACE...THEY’RE BACK IN IT!!’ Shivers. down. spine.

And Motson will always be a fifth rate Moore/Davies. Whether he's retiring now or not.

I got his autograph when I was a kid - I don't remember him being anything other than polite about it.
I always thought he was fairly even handed about Palace, in that he gave us our fair dues even when we were playing against a so-called bigger club. Sure he referred to us as the underdogs in the 4-3 SF, but that's because we were. At Wembley 1990 when we won the toss and got to wear our home kit he remarked how nice it was - I don't remember any other commentator doing that, as well as "Just look at all the balloons" re the Palace end. And then of course there was "Wright!! Oh, what an impact by the substitute!" That line is, for me, right up there with Brian Moore's "That's the part I like!" in the 3-0 Blackburn play-off final. Not saying he's the best commentator or anything like that, but overall I liked him.

Agree - BBC is job for life. For the past 5 years, he has been so behind the action, even when commentating on highlights! Struggles to remember a handful of players names. He was ok in his prime, not my fave, but decent enough.

[QUOTE=foetus eagle;14164141]Classic tune.
The only words I can find to describe that is shocked and stunned. My memory of k untz was of a delightfully warm and inviting type of person. Some described him as young and fluffy but not this young buck. |
