First, very glad to hear that plans are well underway to re-launch what has become a very well liked and adventurous local club, I'm sure that with the spirit and will of many of the old Croydon Athletic fans and former staff on board in the new venture it will become a success.
Sorry about the name though - it's just daft - I was never that keen on having a Croydon Athletic having followed Croydon FC's fortunes for over twenty years over at the Arena, before Wandsworth & Norwood moved into the Mayfields and became Croydon Athletic - I always wanted to follow a team called either Norwood or Thornton Heath ! Not sure what the 'A' in AFC stands for - could be just 'A' as in A Fans Club (which I'm told is what the AFC in the new Wimbledon club stands for) - it could be 'Association' but if, as I suspect, it's 'Athletic' - it will be Athletic Football Club Croydon Athletic - which, I'm sorry, is just plain stupid! Instead of AFC, which must prefix 1000's of different club names - why not go for 'THE' - again, the letters could mean anything - but for me would mean this: Thornton Heath's Eminent Croydon Athletic - T.H.E. Croydon Athletic - far better than boring 'AFC'! All the very best of luck, I will probably get on board at some stage, once I get over the name!

The vast majority of supporters want AFC Croydon Athletic, these are the people that go to the games and raise a lot of money for the club

I'm sure you will all make it a success as was the original club, before the fiasco of the last couple of years.

If the FA are getting fed up of AFC why don't you just call yourselves Croydon Athletic FFC, as in Fans Football Club.

We will have to wait and see, what league to the supporters is unimportant, it's getting the club up and running again, it's only the sisterfisters down the road that are preoccupied with what league we play in.

Glad to see this news. Joined the club as an U10 and played there for three or four years before injury got the better of me (yes at 14 years old)!
Might have to come down again some time, maybe even grt the dust off the boots.

The original is usually the greatest.
For me, that includes the name.

Work begins on a new Croydon Athletic
1:20pm Thursday 9th February 2012 in By Graham Moody » Skip social links Comments(0) The building blocks for a new Croydon Athletic were laid on Monday as work began on creating a phoenix club. About 40 people attended a meeting at Selhurst Evangelical Church where plans to form the new club were discussed and a committee made to take the matter forward. They face a race against time though if they want to compete next season, with the deadline for applications to the league just seven weeks away. “It went very well,” said Paul Smith, former vice chairman of Croydon Athletic, which went bust last month after running out of money. “You are never quite sure how many people will turn up but people were very willing to come forward and offer their help. “It was good and positive and we have agreed to form a new club. “There is, obviously, a lot of things we have got to do between now and the end of March - when we have to apply to the league to get a place for next season. “That is 52 days away and there is a lot to do in that time. “But there was good enthusiasm about it on Monday and we have got a small interim committee charged with doing the work that needs doing.” The Rams have also been supported from Denmark with a dozen members of the fans consortium Fodboldsekskabet A/S, which briefly owned Croydon Athletic last year, interested in helping. They have also had positive discussions with Croydon Council at playing at the same venue as Croydon Athletic - the KT Stadium in Thornton Heath. “Our intention is to play at the old stadium,” added Smith. “We have already had preliminary meetings with the council and they do not believe there are any significant obstacles in the way. “We are under no illusions as to the scale of the task ahead of us but this is a start.”

Don't understand the need to change the club name? Crystal Palace have not changed it's name throughout it's many owners CPFC 2000, CPFC 2010 etc.
I believe that it was once called Crystal Palace AFC in the past but have always been known as Crystal Palace for over 100 years. Stay as Croydon Athletic.

Er, it's a different club. As I understand it, the old one still exists (nominally).
I think a good name would be Croydon Olympic FC reflecting a 2012 formation, an "athletic tradition" and an attractive name for sponsors still buzzing around the 2012 London Olympics brand. Last edited by Lee Farmie; 10-02-2012 at 10:05 AM. |
