Owen captained England nine times, Campbell three times, so hardly grounds for complaint in this instance. For what it's worth, I don't think Owen offers much in a captaincy role either, but to be fair to him, I don't recall him ever complaining that he wasn't England captain for ten years, and making vexatious accusations as to the reasons why.

I find this disrespectful to the guys who were captain during that time....Sol is effectively suggesting that they were chosen over him only cos they're white. They were highly experienced pros who were considered better leaders by several managers.
Seems like he's trying to get attention to sell more books. Whinging like this isn't helpful to those who do have more valid claims of racial discrimination. |

Also if you're going to pick a captain to play in the winter, based on ethnicity, surely one with Inuit blood would be better?

If you believe VHA means what he says, then yes. Think it was a Ron Noades reference.

And as for Campbell, he is an absolute tosser. Glad he has retired and we don't have to put up with seeing his ugly mug every week. Hope no ones buys his book, it will all be self pitying drama queen bullshit, perhaps he should study a bit of a gcse level law and join up with the society for black lawyers. I'm sure he would fit in very well with those *****. |

To put it all into context.
Campbell made his debut against Hungary in May 1996 - David Platt's last game as England captain and Graham Taylor was manager. Taylor then made Paul Ince captain for seven games. Taylor was then replaced bu Hoddle. His captains were: Tony Adams 15 Alan Shearer 34 David Seaman 1 Sol Campbell 3 Next manager was Howard Wilkinson; His one game in charge saw Martin Keown take the captaincy. Then it was Peter Taylor - he gave the armband to David Beckham for one game and he ended up being captain 59 times. Ericksson then took charge. His two captains were; Owen 8 Gerrard 33 McLaren then came in and gave the captaincy to John Terry. Basically, Campbell is talking shit. |

Is a player who walks out of one of his club's matches at half time really the sort of character you'd want as captain of an international side?

well, clearly John Terry is a **** and I don't think he should have been England captain, but at the time McLaren became boss, Campbell's career was very much on the wane anyway.
I don't believe for one moment that all those managers were racist, nor do I believe that anyone could say objectively, that Campbell would have made a more effective captain than any of those who wore the armband over the course of his international career. |

As much as you try and defend him, you ignore the most damning evidence against him in that he went to Holland and started the process of sounding like an Afrikaan.

gut feeling is that there is racism within football. that said I'm not so sure it has been against Campbell, he is trying to sell what im sure will be a very average book. Beckham was a strange choice when he was made captain but I think it turned out to be a good one. Campbell was a good player but England had a lot of very good CB's during his time; Adams, Keown, Southgate, Terry, Ferdinand, King and Woodgate at their peaks would all be worth a starting place in todays England team. A captain needs to be a shoe to play every game and Beckham was that.

Your point still remains though, Campbell is clearly talking shit. I suppose the picking of Owen as captain 8 times was a bit strange but was he even chosen as captain over Campbell for those 8 occasions? Did Campbell even play in those games? It all smacks of sensationalism just to sell a few more copies of his no doubt pretty crap book.
