Because he's 17 and he's one of the best players we've had for years. Hunt and Mariappa won't be here much longer anyway I suspect. Ward will be bought by a bigger club at some point in the next few years and Egbo has the potential to be better than Kelly. Also, if he goes to another club, we are only entitled to circa £25k and potentially rising to about £1.5m if he plays 100 PL games +25% or so sell on fee. Not exactly great for someone with his ability.

I have no doubt that Palace are talking to him about a contract, but it's a question of will he sign it or not. The honest answer to that is that I suspect the ball is not necessarily in his court.

He's the best 17 year old we've had for 3 years or so. At least as good as Clyne at same age IMHO. Though lot easier for Clyne to get into First team as we were not in Prem. Will not be that long before he's best right back at the club. 18 months probably IMHO. Don't be in any doubt that club would have been trying to get him to sign pro deal on day of his 17th birthday.

If he doesn't want to be here, he doesn't want to be here. Just hope the kid has better advisors around him than Bostock did.

This is a very difficult situation. Does the management team bring Egbo into the first team squad to wet his whistle for signing a contract? Or is there a danger of exposing a youngster into the limelight whereby attracting even more suitors to his signature than there no doubt already is, or negatively impacting his development if he's not yet ready for such a promotion?

I have huge faith in Issott & his staff to do what they can. I hope it works out best for both Egbo and Palace, which in my opinion would be his continuing education & progression with the club, rather than sitting in the stiffs at one of the so called bigger clubs, but having a shiny new motor on the drive.

I think we need to ask ourselves which academy player from the last 10 years would break through into our current team. I cant think of 1? Wilf, Clyne, Moses, and Jonny all have needed nurturing in the championship before being ready.

A loan deal might work ?

It will be disappointing if we lose this guy but would probably worry more for him than us TBH. Bad for us but a move now to the wrong club could be catastrophic for him. Balancing the risk he is surely better at Palace for now until he has broken through. So signing a shorter term deal, say 3 years makes more sense.

We also need to remember that all of the above players were fantastic when the broke through but all digressed whilst learning their trade.

Moses in 07/08 was premier league class during our run in that year yet the following season he was more like league 1 class before he switched back on and was sold. Clyne was very much the same.

It's not how I see things... But we have four players who play his position, none of whom are particularly old. I don't know the situation but maybe the kid is weighing up his options based on his chances of breaking through.

People stating Hunt and Mariappa will move on soon is this a guess or fact?

How many players we have that play in his position isn't really relevant though, is it?

Surely how many players we have that play in his position AND can contribute more than he can in the next few years is relevant. If he can be better than Hunt and Mariappa, and probably Kelly as well in the next couple of years, it does not make sense for him to shoot off to a team with a Clyne/Ivanovic/Zabaleta at right-back who he cannot compete with for a few years.

If this guy is looking like he will surpass other right backs, then the management will do what they can to keep him and cash in on what he have at the moment. That is surely what is best for the club in the long run.

Unfortunately its the case these days. With amount of money around and the pressure managers are under why would a club like ours risk and develop a youngster when we can go out and buy a better and more established one at the drop of a hat.

While we are in the Prem and hovering around the drop zone I cant see any academy products being given much of a sniff what so ever.

I'm sure Southampton's relatively recent plummet into the third tier allowed them to bring their - admittedly excellent youngsters from a fine academy - to come through & helped bankroll them for a few years once they had moved them on.

I'm not suggesting we should be looking at back-to-back relegations, before someone says it.

They have given a handful of debuts to players in the Premier League as well though. No reason why we can't do that, but the players have to be good enough. Currently none are good enough to play in the PL, but there's a chance one or two might be in the next few years.

Which is totally expected.

The goal of the academy is to produce players for the first team. That was hard enough whilst in the championship which you could say was 6/7 best league in Europe. It was some achievement that we did that and still are doing that - Egbo and Kai Kai, Gray and Boateng would all be pushing for if we still in the championship.

But trying to produce players that are good enough for the EPL is very very hard. The best young players in England let alone south London/Croydon are struggling to breakthrough.

You don't know how a player will do unless he is given a chance. People are going on like you need to be a wonderkid to get a chance of playing, we're not Chelsea.

I think the calibre of Palace youth players is going to improve in the next few years.

There's a kid we bought from Southend who has been pulling up trees in the 16s this season, I'm looking forward to his certain promotion to the 18s at the back end of this season. Also a CB in the 16s who I suspect will play a few games. Won't name them as it's not fair yet.

The Oasis Academy partnership has really boosted Palace and the players in their football and school life. This is a link to a piece I wrote about it a couple of years ago now (time flies) but it's still quite relevant, and I'm going to be doing an update on it very soon. To view the link you have to Register or Login And here's a more recent piece I did on it: To view the link you have to Register or Login

But I digress slightly. I think clubs need to be braver and give kids a chance. I'm not sure why but Palace have struggled to get clubs to sign our young guys on loan this season, Gray, KaiKai and Boateng all have been out on loan. Gray played three times in a month (one start) at Cheltenham, KaiKai has a handful of appearances at Cambridge but has been an unused sub lately, Boateng hasn't even gone out on loan this season IIRC, Inniss is doing OK at Port Vale, JBW is now an unused sub at Southend.

With the 18s, there's two player who are the best of the bunch, but even they might struggle. They have both been on the bench for the 21s this season though, and I think there will be a big clear out of 21s in the summer, paving the way for the 18s to stake a claim.

Manny Egbo is a regular in the 21s at 17, and has been for a while now. The question is, what does he want most? I fear he will leave for a minimal fee, and that would be a great shame, because he's a nice lad and a talented player.

I am disappointed for the youngsters out there on loan at the moment as only Appiah has been a complete success. Most seem to start well and get encouragement but fade and end up on the bench or worse. I don't know if this is imply reflecting quality, the challenge of doing this for the first time (maturity) or what. But disappoint for the clubs and the players I am sure. it had looked like JB-W was going to do OK but the wheel seems to have fallen off even that now. Not sure how much support they get from Palace through this but to some extent part of the development is standing on thier own two feet I guess.
