I remember Clyne's debut against Barnsley. He was only picked that night because we had so many injured full backs at the time. And he then proceeded to have a wonderful first match, which kept him in the first team squad from then onwards

That's the sort of luck Egbo needs. The problem is that we were prepared to take that sort of gamble in the Championship, but are much less inclined to do so in the Prem. If every right back on our books, except Egbo, was injured he probably still wouldn't get a game. We'd more likely do something like switch an experienced CB into that position rather than risk an untried youngster.
I think plucking Clyne out and giving him a go was one of Warnocks finest moments with us. I remember that Barnsley game. Clyne looked like he was playing his hundredth game for us not his first. People were just open-mouthed afterwards, I don't think a young full back had such an impact since we had Ashley Cole on loan

Is Pardew supportive. I ask because I gained the impression from his time at Newcastle that they weren't bringing many of their own through which is sad since youth football is so strong up there. Its a mixed blessing at times this Premier league stuff because it is fun watching the kids come through

I don't think Pardew has much to do with the academy at all. Neither did Pulis or Warnock, but that's because they are all first team managers. I doubt Gray & Boateng would have been on the bench if he didn't have any interest in the academy though. Suspect someone else would have been called to fill the gaps.

Have a slightly amusing anecdote about Pardew and the academy in a feature on two academy players coming soon.

The problem we have is the need to stay up for its financial rewards, which means we cant afford to gamble by introducing any youngsters in the squad let alone being played. We could have said the same about Clyne, but by taking that chance in being played for whatever the reasons, showed it can pay off and it did big time.
Hopefully if we can muster another 7 to 9 points which I think will see us safe, then we should introduce possibly Two of our outstanding youngsters like Egbo into the squad (obviously if good enough) and maybe if necessary give them say 20 minutes game time. That would tell us so much more of the persons ability and character to make the move up, and also the player a huge confidence boost, possibly in this case holding on to young Egbo as he sees the chance to progress with us.
That is why I have said in a previous post players like Innis and Jerome Williams and possibly One or Two others should be included in pre season with the senior squad to give them a much needed confidence boost, and then sent to a decent club on say an initial Six month loan.
A lot of that must be down to our disjointed Prem seasons.
Both seasons have seen management changes, with the first manager under loads of pressure.
If we stay around this season, keep our manager and continue to build the squad, we might see upper/mid table stability, and the opportunity to give some youngsters some playing (sub) try-outs.

Thank god we did what a brilliant defender Shaw was very very under rated and criminal he didn't get a few England caps imo. I know he got a call up but he deserved more.

Think he went off the boil a bit and got a couple of injuries, maybe got a bit complacent? Think he's working his way back into it now and he's still very young, been around since he was 15 i think, i could be wrong

Clyne also had a trial at Arsenal when a young early teenage winger. He scored 2 in a trial match but was not invited back.

It is of course a career and a relatively short one for these lads so they have to do what is best for them. Loads of lads jump around the Academies. Always have. Arsenal got Gibbs from Wimbledon Academy. We got current U18s CB O'Dwyer who had just signed a pro deal from Reading 2 years ago. We got Inniss and Binnom-Williams from Fisher Athletic Academy.
All pro clubs are very quick to release players when they no longer think they will be good enough. We've released a fair few from out U16s and U18s in the last few weeks.
Loyalty cannot be a one way street.

Allassani is 19 now. Sadly struggled with step up to mens football. Still very slight and gets knocked off ball very easily. Had been only sub for U21s a lot but been starting a few of their games now and showing tentative signs of starting to get to grips with physical needs of game a little. Still a long way to go. Reminds me of ex Academy lad who was a star when young but struggled physically with mens football in James Dayton. Club ran out of patience and released him and was not until he was early 20s that he was ready physically and played in the Scottish Prem.
Injuries have sadly put Gus Sow so far behind that I think his time at Palace will very soon come to an end.

You raised some valid points, and as you quite rightly say with the turmoil of the past 18months, management changes etc was a period of upheaval. Hopefully now with a settled management team we can now approach the promotion and development of youth players a higher priority.
If done sensibly it is crucial to clubs of our standing, and if players like Egbo is as good as "Woosie" says, then we need to make every effort to hold on to them by making every effort to encourage them into staying.

Should have signed egbo up at 16! Guess he is thinking why sign at palace go out on loan play 21's no chance of getting into first team in the prem at the moment get released in a couple of years time saying he has gone down hill or he developed a bad attitude, this boy is by far the stand out player we have got european u17 champion and we havent got him signed up yet its a blow to the
academy if he does not sign. Sign him up gary.

We can't make him sign , hopefully he will but if someone has got in his ear then we might lose him . I really hope he stays as he does seem like a good prospect who could make that step up .

I'm not really sure why he would want to, or what the point would be.

I think he was one of the standby players for just one England squad. Probably about the best man to man marker we've had at the club. Also remember him playing well and scoring in a midfield role when we had players missing in one game!

More chance of me signing for Palace than that happening. Which is totally fair as well. Not something he should be commenting on.
