Our organisation and defense has kept us up the last few seasons. We have survived in spite of the attacking system we use, not because of it. Hundreds of matches have been played at premiership level in which our 'creativity' has been shown to be poor, both statistically and empirically. As for Gayle, he has been given no more than a few handfuls of starts, oftentimes playing as a winger. When he played as a striker, it was normally on his own in the same system that isolates the striker from midfield and in which the striker never gets a through pass or ball to feet, just hoofs and a blue -moon decent cross. When Gayle played in a pair he scored goals but, right or wrong, we didn't seem to want to play that way often.
In that context, the jury is still out for me in terms of him being a failure. I can't see how any striker can be a great success here given how we cannot supply regularly decent crosses and only bother trying to play through balls down the flanks. Gayle may have flourished given a run or games in a team that prioritized passing to the striker but we never tried that at Palace. Even if he rakes in goals at Newcastle it is relatively meaningless as a measure of his abilities since he will be playing at Championship level and for the team most likely to win that division. It will likely be two years minimum before anyone can say whether Gayle can score reliably at Premiership level. All I know is that our system doesn't work too well for the striker's benefit and another window is passing in which there is little sign we are doing anything to improve our service to the striker, unless Townsend is either a vastly better crosser than Yala / Wilf or can function well as a ten. Thank God we have strenghtened the defence. It might save us again, even if we end up weaker in the striker department at the end of this transfer window compared to when it began. |

Gay!e hasn't played in the Championship before has he? Great opportunity to kickstart his career. I wish him well.

Thirteen goals in 29 games for Posh if Wiki is to be believed. It's his level.

A good question that we all probably know the answer to Hamms.

Totally irelevant but quite possibly. Would Rafa have sold Townsend had Newcastle stayed up?

One goal in five so far suggests you might be rather over optimistic in your expectations.

It wasn't just Pardew that failed to spot how fantastic Gayle was, he also failed to star under all his previous Palace managers. Bottom line is that even if his finishing is as good as some people think, & personally I don't think it is, the rest of his game is not good enough.
For a free spending Newcastle that should absolutely tear the Championship apart, bossing most games, he may do ok next season, but even then I'd lay any money that he is then sold on or replaced in the team in the summer. Apart from one cameo against Liverpool he has never looked like a Premier league player. |

Gayle played against us in the Championship, last game of the season when we got promoted. Cried on the pitch at Selhurst. He was great that season for Posh.

Gayle can't win on this thread. If he scored 40 it would be the championship. If less than 20 then 'he is shit'.
He is a top quality poacher imo, but has shown a bit less of that the last 6-12 months. Palace however need a Cameron Jerome to suit their system. |

Boro got Negredo, Hull are up shit creek and Burnley I can't see spending £10mill on a striker until they become established, look at the signings they have made so far, doesn't look like they are pushing the boat out. Newcastle are a club with a big fanbase being a one city club and all that! It's a good move for him, he'll get game time, score goals and maybe next season have the chance to prove himself in the Premier League again. We've gone in an opposite direction, we need to get in a striker that suits our system and someone more prolific and better potential in his sort of game which is why Benteke and Berahnio coming in would be the absolute ticket for us. |

And look at the mess we're in now. Clubs know we're desperate for a striker and can hold us to ransom over price. I would have kept Gayle but if Pardew was determined to offload him, at least get a replacement in first! |

he was the best we had at putting the ball in the back of the net and proved it by being top scorer for the 3 seasons he was here and from far less game time and a top manager came in and brought him for £10 million , I don't see any top managers lining up to by Wickham or Campbell , anyway he's gone and good luck to him , meantime we're currently up the creek without any strikers |

Great finisher, but clearly there is something about him that made 5 managers deem him not worthy of a starting place.
There's no conspiracy theories here. It's not 5 (FIVE) managers not recognising that he's a good player. They've all seen something to make them all not start him regularly. He's gone. Move on. We got a decent price for him and he'll do well in the Championship.

His three seasons were 2013/14 - 20 appearances - 3 prem / 0 league cup / 1 Fa cup - total 4 2014/15 - 29 appearances - 5 prem / 4 league cup / 1 FA Cup - total 10 20/15/16 - 20 appearances - 3 prem / 4 league cup / 0 FA Cup - total 7 |

How does that relate to everyone else? ie was he still league top scorer taking into account game time?

Selling Gayle before having a replacement lined up is incompetence beyond belief. Gayle was a luxury we could have afforded. Get a new striker in and he becomes surplus to requirements, then yes sell him on. Probably good for him as well. But this?
Pardew is well past his sell-by date at Palace. He is only still in the job because of the FA cup run and should have been gone before the end of last season. I have zero faith in the man. |

The sale of Gayle is currently looking really stupid. Hopefully that will change very soon.
