he was the best we had at putting the ball in the back of the net and proved it by being top scorer for the 3 seasons he was here and from far less game time and a top manager came in and brought him for £10 million , I don't see any top managers lining up to by Wickham or Campbell , anyway he's gone and good luck to him , meantime we're currently up the creek without any strikers

Of the seven goals he scored, four of them came in the league cup against Charlton & Shrewsbury.

Three of them were penalties.

Something the people who say Gayle was top goal scorer in 3 seasons love to forget.

Scott Dann was the top scorer in the league last season and Glenn Murray was the top goal scorer the season before that.

When our CB is our top scorer with 5 goals and we decide to sell a striker before getting one in then you know something has gone wrong somewhere.

Selling Gayle when we did must mean the club is pretty sure of getting two upgrades in. We need to give them the benefit of the doubt and be patient. If what we hope for doesn't happen, by all means go apeshit and expect explanations.

We sold Gayle who is at best a back up striker whose style doesn't fit our system and we've brought in Townsend who is a almost certain starter who does suit our system. Gayle's goal ratio including cup games isnt evidence of his sale being stupid or reckless. Bottom line is that if he's not deemed good enough to start, we should upgrade him for a player who is. For whatever reason, his style and ability wasn't making enough impact at palace and it's not a good use of our resources to keep him if he can't get into our starting line up.

Our 3 signings so far have each made our 1st 11 stronger than last season's and all the players we've lost we wouldn't have wanted in our starting team anyway. Quality over quantity is the way forward. We also now have the wage bill freed up and cash in the bank to go for a better quality striker who will get more game time and more goals than the 3 forwards we've let go. So far, it all seems pretty sensible to me but we still have those who want a pop at the management for not signing Benteke when they don't have visibility of the facts.

The moaners have been moaning since before we sold Scannell and bought Bolasie (fantastic decisions with the benefit of hindsight). History shows that, so far at least, the moaners don't know best and the management are doing an exceptional job. Without having visibility of all the facts, our judgement as outsiders is at best an ignorant guess and people shouldn't take too much notice of 95% of such statements (both positive and negative). The moaners will no doubt carry on moaning irrespective of who we sign and how we perform on the pitch.

The good news for the moaners is that if you consistently moan and predict relegation, statistically speaking you will one day be right as we are still punching above our weight and Its inevitable that one year it will happen. Until then though, why not just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Being in the mix to sign £20m+ centre forwards and buying English and French players in their prime who are knocking on the door of their international teams is dream territory as a palace fan. Chill out and enjoy it! If you can't do that, then I question whether you'll ever find enjoyment in being a palace fan.

How is it irrelevant whether the manager is in charge of a premier league team or not?

I could also ask - would Pardew have sold Gayle if Palace went down?

Extremely relevant to the decision making process when you talk about managerial judgement.

Nor is our passing / crossing / general creativity but some BBS'ers can only recognize the deficiencies of certain players...who had far more opportunity than Gayle. I haven't the foggiest if Gayle could have worked out since the supply to him was sh*t and he was the less physically suited to back -to -goal hoof balls and random crosses but I do know Wilf / Yala / Puncheon are still considered gods here despite failing to deliver decent final balls far more often than Gayle ever failed to take his chances. But, for those players to be above reproach, some else must be to blame for the lack of goals. Be very interesting, if we do land Benteke, to see the reactions of some here if he, too, fails to thrive in our system. Gayle wasn't the solution. But he's not the problem either.

When a CB is our top scorer no-one should complain about a striker being sold!

There's no conspiracy theories here. It's not 5 (FIVE) managers not recognising that he's a good player. They've all seen something to make them all not start him regularly.

He's gone. Move on. We got a decent price for him and he'll do well in the Championship.
His finishing wasn't even that good.

This is so very true. Criticise Bolasie or Wilf and you are called an idiot or a Seaweed. But the delivery of both was very poor last season. Fancy tricks - plenty; end product - very little. But let's blame Gayle instead. After all 5 managers well versed in the art of creative attacking football can't all be wrong can they? And Rafa's just a foreign idiot? Doh!!!

Wonder how Murray got 7 goals in 17 games in the PL playing with the same wingers.

Or maybe it is because Gayle movement and finishing isn't that good.

We have basically swapped Gayle for Townsend.

I expect Townsend will get more league goals this season than Gayle's best return of 5 in a season. Yes we need more options upfront but Dwight was'nt ever going to be the answer to our front line problems.

He'll do well up there though in the Championship, no doubt about it.

Can't say I've had any interest in Gayle since he left, so no idea how he's got on in pre-season. However, it would amuse me if he was on the bench tonight and/or wasn't used as 1st choice striker for Newcastle. Would probably say quite a lot that

Gayle is playing against Fulham tonight. Playing for some stripey team managed by a fat Spaniard

Fulham: (4-4-2) Button; Odoi, Kalas, Madl, Malone; Cairney, Tunnicliffe, McDonald, Ayite; Aluko, Smith

Newcastle: (4-4-2) Sels; Janmaat, Hanley, Lascelles, Dummett; Anita, Hayden, Colback, Ritchie; Perez, Gayle
