I liked Dwight, but yet another very injury prone player.

2017/18 was always going to be the acid test for Gayle. 35 games 6 goals. His overall record in the Premier League now roughly 1 in 5. 21 premier league goals in total (from 137 shots of which 49 have been on target) Big chances missed 18, and he averages 10.67 passes per game. You could argue that Newcastle didn't score as many as other teams, but now Newcastle have retained their status they'll invariably invest and Gayle's game time will go backwards and he'll stagnate again as he did here. He is a good Championship player no more no less and last season showed this. In an article in the mail last week the comments underneath (which you have to take which a pinch of salt read): To view the link you have to Register or Login - None of Newcastle's strikers are good enough at this level. All need to go. - Take him ! We will even throw in joselu - Why? Keeps getting £10m+ moves to high end Champ teams then flops in the PL. Rinse and repeat - It could work out to be a good signing for us in the championship!!!! - Definitely proven not to be pl quality - Take him please -Play the young lad Campbell. Give him a chance - Sell him for £10m, a striker with a proven track record of goals at Championship level but has had too many chances at EPL level and fluffed the lot.

Classic 'mezzanine' striker. He won't be short of offers though for scoring goals that get clubs promoted from the Championship.

Was never a Dwight fan apart from the 3-3 obviously. Good finisher but no other attributes it seemed. But fair play he's made more appearances for Newcastle in The Prem than I thought his ability would allow.

Presented with the chances Benteke had for us this season he would have scored at least 10 compared to CB 3.

I’m not too rose tinted specs about palace players most of the time so hopefully have balance on this.
Gayle is limited but I think as part of a front two he’d be excellent. He was often on the wing here and when central usually alone which doesn’t play to his strengths. He’s often lone striker at Newcastle too. He was crying out to play upfront with chamakh ans Murray and when they linked you could see the potential but it never got the chance to shine In a front two I think he’d score bucket loads. Should he come back to palace? Maybe but probably not. A cruel twist of fate that benteke and Gayle would probably be a fantastic partnership that would thrive under Roy and be great for them both. At palace though? It would be risky simply due to the fact that some at palace wouldn’t give them time if they didn’t score for the first two games. The groans and moans would be decisive and when players need a confidence boost, as we’ve seen with benteke this season it can fuel a complete failing in front of goal. Shame, I’d be cautiously excited about a Gayle/benteke front partnership

Two up front means dropping Townsend or being overrun in centre midfield.
