Winter Break
Looks like the powers that be are To view the link you have to Register or Login. I know a lot of other leagues do it but I'm not convinced. It either means more mid-week games or fewer teams, neither of which is a positive step IMO.

Just scrap the ******* league cup and have a couple of weeks off beginning of January, open the transfer window during that period so that doesn't drag on all bloody month.

I've never wanted a winter break, but given sky's scheduling of the Christmas fixtures I'm coming round to the idea. Don't see how they could feasibly fit one in at the moment though, I would imagine if they sack off the two legged league cup semi final that would allow for a week, but other than that it would mean the end of cup replays.

Move the September Internationals to late December / Early January

Are clubs not given enough money by sky etc to build a squad capable of playing the amount of games required?
I love how many games you get over Christmas myself. |

How do other countries do it?
Do they have fewer cup competitions? Assume they schedule league games on weekends and have all cup games in the week. |

This is the way forward. Nobody cares about the League Cup, get a couple of extra games in before the turn of the year (don't change Christmas scheduling) and then have a break in the first 2 weeks of January.

I think the idea is to play the 3rd round of the FA cup and then have a 2 week break

Most of them don’t have a League Cup competition and none of them have their FA Cup in the same format as England, and are not defensive about playing a certain round on a certain weekend.

Bad idea IMO everyone will fly half way across the world to play friendlies anyway

The Christmas Schedule was shocking this year with scheduling loads of injuries picked up by teams. The season needs to be longer rather than shorter. |

No winter break but lose one round of fixtures over Christmas, most teams played 2 games in 48 hours, which is unnecessary.

The funny thing is most other countries don't tend to do it anymore. Italy and Spain played almost through Christmas like us. I think maybe they had Christmas week off but certainly played up to it and just after.
The only League who had a proper Winter Break is Germany and the Bundesliga has less teams than the other three I mentioned above.

All the big teams will just go off to USA, Middle East, Far East, etc to play money spinning friendlies.
It's a no from me, one of the best things about Christmas was basically going from Boxing Day to the first week of January always having at least one game to watch everyday. |

The format in the Championship always seemed to be:
Boxing Day 28th December New Years Day It seems at the moment they are literally trying to shove games in every day.

Why does everyone keep saying "Christmas"? It will be a winter break, it doesn't have to stop Boxing Day or NYD fixtures.
Play Boxing Day, (poss one in between) NYD, FA Cup 3rd Rd, 2 weeks off 2nd/3rd weeks of Jan. Dump the League Cup. Two weeks is no worse than an international break - and if clubs get 2 weeks and choose to play friendlies, then when Wenger, Mourinho and the like moan, we tell them to stuff it. It's just a shame nobody in footballing power has the balls to do any of the above. |

Personally, I can't see why they can't have more fixtures at the beginning of the season - Saturday/ Midweek/Saturday/Midweek/ Saturday. Then you would have 5, maybe 6 fixtures before the first Int'l break (when there is normally 3 games each played - ridiculous !) I know a few fans may be off on their holidays, but the pitches would be better in August and the players (being at the start of the season) would be in better shape.
And I don't think you need a break but don't cram in all those fixtures around December. And don't scrap the League Cup but no 2 leg semi final - One off game on a neutral ground, but not Wembley. |
