Because they paid Jack Rodwell £70k a week!!!

If you look at the debt they have which any new owner would need to take on the vast majority of it is owed to Short himself. He may have to take a reduction in that to get a sale.

Beyond that they have their own Agilo problem with millions owed to a debt management company who are charging over £8m a year in interest!

Lens £8m.
Kaboul £3m.
Borini £10m.
Khazri £9m.
JOZY ALTIDORE £6m!!
Giaccherini £6.5m
Mavrias £3m

Pretty pathetic transfer incomings. Massive wages for poor players......

Not sure how the 'greed' league can be blamed, unless people are suggesting Sunderland were forced to buy these players....?

Difference is palace have assets (Zaha, Townsend, Benteke etc). Sunderland didn't (outside of pickford). Newcastle had assets (Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Townsend, Cabella) when they got relegated and replaced most of the squad.

If we make the right kind of signings like Newcastle did then we could do well. That's a big if. We'd also need to make better signings when coming back up.

A 48,000 capacity stadium in League One. Gonna be a great atmosphere on a wet and windy winter's night v Accrington.

Hmm. Let's just hope we survive this season then - not many clubs outside the top 7 have spent £30 million on a single player and we have done it twice! And not many are paying any of their players more than £100k a week (Sakho, Benteke, Cabaye, Zaha)

Khazri is a decent player IMO although things didn't work out for him up there. He's on loan at Rennes this season and I saw him put in a MOM performance v Lyon a couple of weeks ago. He's the sort of player we should be looking at.

Bought too many foreign players and lost their identity over a number of seasons. Spent too much on getting in too many ex-prem players who were on their way down (Wes Brown, OShea etc

I cannot believe Jon O'Shea is still playing. He was finished when we played them early after promotion, gifting us that penalty.

Apparently they have to overpay because players and especially their partners dont really fancy it up in the North East.

Basket case club but got a lot of time for Sunderland fans though, always seemed like a decent lot when I've been up there.

Defensively not very solid but attacking threat is very good.

Their trouble was in season 15/16, before the explosion in transfer fees they spent a net £50m as well as significant wages.

Their problems now all stem from having loaded the debt onto a company who are making a huge ROI and bleeding them of significant money. Think i read it is less than £60m debt but £8m a year in interest at a time of record low interest rates!

The rest is up to Short as he was the one who made the mistakes. If they go down, both of them are likely to have to accept 2p in the £ and someone will look to buy them out of administration for a few million and start again.

Luckily for them there is no value in a speculator buying the club for their ground for redevelopment like there would have been at Palace.

Hull fans interrupting their game tonight - protesting about their owners.

Hull & Sunderland have won just 11/66 games in the Championship this season after last season's relegation. 11 out of 66.
