Drink anywhere other than West Street and you won't get kettled.

Much as it is great fun to meet up with fellow fans at away games and have a singsong and all that, for Brighton over the past few years we have kept to small groups drinking in less obvious pubs, got a cab up to the ground with time to spare and touch wood had no real trouble. Last year we got booted out of a few pubs in Kemptown but that was our fault to be fair and I thanked them on the way out and they didn't call the old bill or anything

This, tonnes of pubs in the Laines which will have next to no Brighton fans in.

Nice and easy for me, I just show my ID to any potential bouncer and remind them I'm from Hove when they ask if I'm a Palace fan.

We stopped for a couple in the Fiddler's Elbow one season (literally about 20 yards from West Street). The bouncer asked us if we were Palace fans. We said no, he let us in. Most pubs beyond that don't even have bouncers.

Why people choose to drink in a rammed Wetherspoons before being kettled and marched half way around Brighton is beyond me.

Drank in there last season, the bouncer (Eastern European) asked if we were Palace fans and to avoid answering it I showed him my ID which says I'm from Hove. I could tell he didn't want to let me in but I was sober and he couldn't think of a genuine reason so he let me and our group in

As you said, most of the pubs away from West Street won't pose any problem, so why bother getting caught up in the kettling?

100%. Think we went in the Victory Inn a few years back. No problems, no march and straight onto a train. Easy.

Football’s a funny old game. Last time, the gates get stormed and loads of bangers are let off during the game, the cock-up with the kettling/escort leads to a full scale punch up at the station before the game, a few hundred Palace fans are refused entry even though they have tickets and are forced back towards Croydon even if they don’t live that way and then the next day the Sussex police accuse Palace fans of coming tooled up. The outcome? An increased allocation for the next game!

'Last time?' Don't forget we also then played there in the FA Cup

Oh yes! Those two games merged into one for me! Although, I think there were more “issues” going back to station after the Cup game.

Being in the escort paid off for the first ever game at the AMEX. Taken straight up the hill and onto an empty train.

Now they take you on a 2 hour tour of Brighton so there is no point being in it.

For some it's a macho thing, rather than swift access to an empty train

Why people can't just have a drink in one of the many pubs and or get to the Amex early and drink there is beyond me.

I just drive there and use their car park. Have to say it is the most soulless away game by some considerable distance, mainly due to there being absolutely bugger all within walking distance around the ground. Find it depressing to be honest. Wouldn't mind so much if we played there on a hot sunny day but its usually freezing whenever we are there.

What about Reading? At least at Falmer it’s walking distance to Moulsecoomb and Lewes Road, in Reading it’s by the M4!

Lewes is usually fine. Big queue for train but moves quickly enough.

Never, ever get the escort. I drink in the Palace pub leave early and get the train. The Police really did not have a clue last couple of times. I left a couple of mates half hour before and they got held outside and refused entry.

At Reading I can park for free on street within walking distance, and there is both a McDonalds and a KFC on a retail park a very short walk from the ground for some pre-match meal which passes a bit of time. Plus there is a Smyths toyshop that my son likes to have a nosey around. There is also a traditional chippy near to where I park, and a Holiday Inn if was inclined to want to drink away from the ground.

I do admit that going 'as a family' I'm looking for very different things to those who go by train and are mainly looking for a place for a drink.

At Brighton we grab a takeaway from the chippy at the bottom of Coldean on the drive in and eat that in the car park, when we've parked up but it really is an eerie experience. I'll grant you those who go by train and spend their pre match drinking in Brighton or Lewes probably find it isn't so dull.

Decent sized group of us drank in Eastbourne pre match last time. No old bill to hassle us. Direct train straight to Falmer takes half hour.

We have used Lewes when going to the games down there. Never any issues, Half decent pubs, easy transport to the ground.

It's still a shit ground and away day in my book though, See you there..
