What has the UK got right?

Just seeing all the doom and gloom on both the BJ/Tory and Stammer/Labour threads. Made me wonder what is better today than in the past. What has the government, both parties, done to make our lives better. I can create a HUGE list of things that are worse but came up with.

Rubbish collection. No more bin noise and rubbish strewn over the place.

Food costs and variety. Even with the huge increases its tsill a lot cheaper than the 70's/80s.

Flights/holidays abroad. We now expect this.

Telephone calls. Used to cost a fortune per minute, my dad developed this phone voice that was 100 words a second to save money, then would go mad when you ask him to repeat coz it was too fast. You can also pop to a shop grab a phone and be connected rather that waiting weeks.

Our advancement toward a green power. Not there yet but still far better than other similar countries which also leads me to air quality. I dont come back from london with black shit collars any more. I feel happy to sit outside and eat.

Yep a washing machine today is better than the one of 40 years ago but thats technology moving forward not government influenced. ( although i recon the old ones lasted longer ;-) )

Im sure there is more & I really struggle, but can list loads of "when I were a lad"

So what have the romans/government ever done for us over the last 50 years.

1. High speed internet. I’m now full fibre but even before it beats anything I can ever get abroad.

2. Football. Best in the world at all levels of the game.

I don’t engage with anything else so wouldn’t know.

A huge variety of decent quality tv shows, for very little cost. You don't even need Netflix, let alone Sky - iplayer, 4OD, ITVX, etc, are all free.

Health and safety standards.

Engineering standards.

Workers rights and conditions.

General safety in society is marvellous. Being able to freely move from place to place without fear of murder, rape, robbery, intimidation etc.

I'm not sure any of those are UK specific. And most of Europe is well ahead of us on everything. Europeans coming here think we're a backward country.

Yep agree with this but that isn’t government driven.

On your first point I guess it depends where you live but the mess our dustmen/refuse collectors/ Recycle engineers or whatever they are called now is disgusting plus they leave those horrible wheelie bins all over the place, its a pain trying to avoid them when walking down the street. In addition the large houses in some areas of Croydon that have been converted into flats have so many wheelie bins they create a terrible eyesore.

Those bins are also difficult for older people or people with disabilities to move around especially if you have steps up to you front door.

On the second point we were taking holidays abroad 50 /60 years ago. Granted there was less travel by plane but we travelled by road or rail (rail is making a comeback for holidays across Europe which is good to see)

I am not sure all todays tourist air traffic is good for the planet anyway. Not sure being crammed into an Easyjet/Ryan air etc is a relaxing way to travel anyway.

The music was far better 50/60/70 years ago as well !

Much is better today of course but we have also lost a lot as well.

What has the UK got right?

By that you mean the government, the UK isn't an entity that can make decisions for itself with the label of the "UK".

The answer over the last 13 years?

We have gone back significantly. Wages down, cost of living up. More inequality. The poor have got poorer, the rich have got richer.

However, we have iplayer, Now TV and Netflix, but of course nothing whatsoever to do with the UK government.

I'm not sure many of these are necessarily down to government decisions and policy.

Many have more to do with changes in society, technology and non government organisations.

The M25. It might seem a nightmare but imagine the absolute nightmare today's traffic would have been without it. Also the M40 - motorways were a series of great necessity.
