A great final 20/25km of today's stage! I wonder if Yates isn't doing too much at the moment and if he'll have enough in the tank for the very difficult 3rd week!

Or does Yates almost have to keep pushing and nicking seconds off Dumoulin wherever he can.
Considering he might lose at a guess up to a minute in the final Time Trial?

Up to a minutes would be a sensational result for Yates.

3 years ago he lost 38 seconds and 43 seconds over 14km and 18km and the year before 1min9 over 26km.

Given he lost 20 seconds over the 10km opener in the Giro it would be brave to say he is closing the gap in the ITT. As the Stage 16 ITT is over 34km i would be expecting that gap to be as wide as 2 minutes or more. It comes after a rest day, after 15 stages so a lot of other factors but Yates probably has 1/3 of what he needs at the moment IMO. In trying to get those seconds and push he might leave himself short in that final week though. Dumoulin has looked relatively untroubled so far from what i have seen. Not surprising when he is going for the Giro/Tour double that he is not going to push too hard.

The main factor here being that Dumoulin is an absolute monster in these long time trials. He won last year's World championships by nearly a minute over 31k and by over a minute (to Froome) over 37k with hills in the 2016 TdF.

Going by the gaps in To view the link you have to Register or Loginand all other factors being equal, it could be nearer 3 mins.

As an aside, is it me or is this one of the least covered grand tours for a while? Not many betting sites offering stage odds, few stage previews anywhere, seemingly less buzz on social media. Froomegate having an effect?

Great ride from Froome. Interesting hearing before the race he was the only one of the major GC types to recon the course in the last few weeks.

Perfectly set up for a tight battle for pink (and the BBS velogames!) going into the last week - if Yates takes another 20 seconds or so tomorrow, I think Dumoulin will nip ahead in the ITT but then still a couple more opportunities for Yates to gain on climbs before Rome.

The bookies have it at roughly 50:50 at the moment. Perhaps Dumoulin with a very, very slight advantage but no more than that.

Although today's stage is nowhere near as hard as yesterday's, there may still be some small time gaps between the GC contenders and possibly some bigger ones if any of the riders haven't recovered from yesterday's gruelling stage!

The weather's not too good apparently so the technical descents could be fun!
